Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It's no secret that the College of Wooster's campus is impressive. Students, alumni, and community members can't say enough about how much they love to walk through the College in the fall as the leaves are changing or down Beall Avenue in the summer when the flowers are in full bloom. Wooster may be an old college, but it has been beautifully maintained. The stonework highlights the impressive architecture of the academic buildings, and although buildings like Kauke Hall have undergone huge renovations to modernize the classrooms and add computer labs and cafés, the outside of the buildings have kept their iconic and traditional look. In fact, the College has made it a priority to keep facilities up-to-date. As a result of this, however, it often seems as if the College is in a constant state of construction. A new residence hall, Gault Manor, was built in 2008, while in 2009, Babcock reopened after renovations were completed. In 2010, Lowry Center was renovated, and the Scot Center, Wooster's most recent athletic facility, opened in January 2012.

There are still buildings on campus that could use a little love, but the College's hard work to improve the campus's facilities is obvious. The construction noise can definitely get in the way of your mid-afternoon naps, but the finished product is worth the sacrifice.

Getting There

There are a number of improvements happening on campus lately. We have just added a beautiful state of the are athletic center that people love (yet not too long ago the roof leaked). Our libraries are also being slowly renovated which is nice. What needs to happen though is the remodeling of dorms and the addition of another. There are getting to be too many students stuffed onto this campus and the housing facilities are being destroyed due to that.

On the Whole, Pretty Good

The libraries are spacious and have tons of books (if they don't have what you need, Consort or OhioLink will hook you up.) We're getting a new gym, and it's pretty huge. Lowry (the student center) is a little dated, but it's still nice. We only have one main dining hall, which is in Lowry. It's good, but it can get cramped easily. Kittredge offers local and organic food, but only during lunch on the weekdays. On the whole, the campus is beautiful, and I'm very satisfied.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

Environmental sustainability is a top priority at the College of Wooster. The newly renovated athletic facility was built with the largest solar roof of any college facility in the country. Plus, Wooster reports, that "Upgrades to 34 campus buildings will reduce the college's carbon footprint by 36 percent." Students are also very involved in the "green" movement at the College. Greenhouse, a student environmentalist organization, recently helped to convert Lowry to a "Trayless Cafeteria" in addition to starting the "Rideshare" program. Groups like Organic Farming and Peace by Peace also work to educate the College on environmental issues and encourage change within the community.

Favorite Things To Do

WAC, the Wooster Activities Crew, is a large part of student life on campus. They are constantly providing entertainment, both on and off campus, to students at Wooster. Every year, WAC puts on "Party on the Green" and "Spring Fest," large outdoor concerts complete with games, activities, and refreshments. They also plan "Winter Gala," a themed formal held in the Lowry Center.

A Wooster student's favorite thing to do? Keep busy. At Wooster, in one day you could go bowling and play pool right after classes, have a cookout for dinner, cheer the football team on under the lights at the stadium, and then go dancing at the Underground into the wee hours of the morning.

Did You Know?
  • Every week, a group of volunteers comes to the Lowry Center with their therapy dogs for students. A familiar shaggy face and a wagging tail can always brighten your day!
  • Wooster holds forums on a wide variety of topics throughout the year. The College works hard to find speakers who relate to students' coursework or who can provide an interesting perspective on current issues.
