Overall Experience
Goucher -
Baltimore, MD
Goucher provides an atmosphere for students to grow, learn, and expand their views on the world without being restricted or criticized. With an attentive and experienced faculty, freedom to design one’s major, endless leadership opportunities, and a stimulating series of lectures, discussions, and performances, the Goucher experience is one of a kind. Despite complaints on parking, public transportation, the social scene, and campus facilities, the majority of Goucher students have great overall experiences. The quality and variety of the academics, study abroad programs, and the close-knit community are among the contributing factors to their experiences.
Students who transferred, or those who wish they did, disliked the atmosphere of student apathy when it comes to on-campus events, clubs, and athletics. Most feel that Goucher’s small community is too small for them and that it doesn’t provide enough options when it comes to both academic and social life. One difference between those who have a great overall experience and those who do not is that the first group knows what they want from Goucher and are willing to take initiative to achieve it. Goucher doesn’t create the college experience for you—you actually have to get involved on campus and be proactive about things that interest you to find your place within the Goucher community. Students actively involved on campus cite this supportive and open-minded community as the core of their positive experience.

"I enjoy Goucher, but there are some complaints. I really couldn’t imagine being anywhere else, though, because I enjoy having the small classes and small community."

"Overall, I have been very satisfied with my experience at Goucher. I have especially enjoyed the community atmosphere, as well as the nurturing staff. I’ve been blessed with many leadership and academic opportunities at Goucher that would not have been available to me had I attended another school. Though there have been times I have questioned my decision to attend Goucher, I am confident that there is no better place for me."

"Goucher is what you make of it. Everything you could want is available to you, and if it’s not for some reason, there are ways to make things available. The faculty and staff are exceedingly helpful and always willing to help you succeed in whatever it might be that you want to do. People are weird but friendly, and because of our collective open-mindedness, Goucher’s campus is accepting of everyone. Goucher is the kind of campus that breeds creativity and self-actualization; leaving behind the high school-clique atmosphere, and encouraging an eclectic and dynamic learning environment."

"I loved Goucher. I would not exchange my experience for anything. It is extremely well respected, which helps after graduation. My Goucher education prepared me for life post-college and made me into a more humane, compassionate, and open-minded human being."

"My overall experience has been very good, but not fabulous. I sometimes wish I had chosen a larger school with more people to meet and more majors to choose from. What is disappointing a little about Goucher is that the school praises our ‘community,’ but it is not so prevalent. Many events go unattended, and there are few big, successful social events. Everyone does their own thing, so if you like independence, it’s a good school for you."
