Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Incoming freshmen are placed in one of three mixed freshman/sophomore dorms: Loomis, Mathias, and Slocum. All three have their positive and negative aspects.

Slocum has the largest doubles, Loomis the largest singles. Loomis and Mathias vie for the unofficial title of "Party Dorm" each year. Residents of the other halls often joke about Mathias, though its residents love it. Even they realize that its "riot-proof" design is a little less appealing than the other dorms, and there was recently a "Make Mathias Suck Less" campaign in the building.

All three buildings offer a very typical, “thrown into the mix” dorm experience. As the number of admitted students over the last few years has risen, the dorms have seemed particularly crowded. When winter-starts arrive on campus second semester, there are often a lot of forced triples and study rooms converted to singles in the dorms. CC has made a concerted effort to keep students on campus as long as possible, thereby creating a closer-knit student body. To accomplish this goal, CC has made it nearly impossible for anyone but seniors to live off campus. At the same time, the College has dedicated large sums of time and money to making campus living areas more attractive and more numerous.

Sophomores eagerly await their junior years, when they get a chance to live in the apartments. The apartments are comfortable and well maintained and are meant to give upperclassmen a taste of what living on their own will be like. In addition, the College has a number of themed houses and encourages students to create new themed houses. The most innovative of these houses is the Synergy House. Residents make it their goal to live in an environmentally-conscious environment, which means reducing waste, growing vegetables, and creating projects to save energy, amongst other goals. Apart from this house, sophomores and juniors can choose from language houses, diversity houses, and the substance-free houses, all of which offer a different environment and experience.

Dorms Pretty Nice Overall

The freshman dorms are decent, upperclassmen dorms are great. There are decent options for food and the general environment is very welcoming.

Fairly Average

I would say that campus housing is pretty average...dorms for freshamn and sophomores are average, there are three different main dorms, all with different atmospheres to them. One dorm has the biggest rooms which are really nice, one is the "shitshow" dorm (always the place where people are meeting to party and drink) and one that has the strongest sense of community. The on-campus themed houses are pretty nice, and so are the other upper-classmen houses. There are also smaller dorms, and those buildings are beautiful, but the rooms are average sized. The apartments for juniors and seniors are fantastic, if seniors aren't living off campus, they definitely want to be there, as do most juniors

Social Atmosphere and Dorm Life

Of the three main large dorms on the Colorado College campus, there is a continuum regarding social life. Mathias is known as the "party dorm," and I have heard it is hard to sleep there especially on the weekends. Slocum is known as the "Home of the Scholars" and is typically the most quiet of the dorms. It is also home to the substance-free wing. Loomis is a happy medium between Mathias and Slocum, with a lot going on but also enough quiet to get some sleep.
