College Prowler Take

The general student view on campus strictness is that, unless you do something very stupid, you are not likely to get “caught” for much. Resident Advisors in residence halls tend to ignore small, quiet parties, and if you do get caught with a drink, a slap on the wrist is about the most serious repercussion you’ll experience. Campus security is equally lax, unless you’re violent or enjoy breaking windows. Basically, as long as you can have fun without hurting others or vandalizing, you’ll probably stay out of trouble.

The school’s policy is to handle and sanction alcohol abuse and drug use on a case-by-case basis, so there is no zero-tolerance policy in place on campus. President Richard Celeste has stressed what he labels an “alcohol and drug problem” on campus, and although exact plans aren’t known yet, it’s expected that the school will start cracking down. The generally liberal atmosphere, though, assures that CC will never be home to the type of draconian policies that have become popular on the campuses of many state universities. In the end, strictness may increase, but students will still be able to have a good time in residence hall rooms, houses, or wherever else they happen to be.

One reason drugs are so popular on...

One reason drugs are so popular on campus are the extremely lax rules of residence halls and security personnel. Parties are common in residence hall rooms, and even in entire halls. Depending on the RA, most parties only get broken up if something gets broken or if students are seriously disturbing the peace. Consequences are lax if you are caught with drugs, and even moreso if they find you with alcohol in the dorm halls.

If you’re doing something out in the open, you may get caught. But if you stay inside the dorm rooms, you’re generally safe.

If you are behaving responsibly and reasonably, drugs and alcohol are not a huge concern for campus security. RAs may be a little stricter, but not anything you generally have to worry about.

Most people who are supposed to enforce rules are pretty nonchalant about the whole thing, which is great.

You can get away with a lot at CC if you have the money and the influence. If you don’t, it’s still easy to get away with anything because campus policy is so lax. If you get caught, you might have to go in for one counseling session—that’s it.
