Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A student's experience of CC facilities depends largely on the life that the student leads and the activities that he or she is involved in. Athletes, for instance, tend to agree that athletic facilities are below par. Complaints stem mostly from the postage stamp-sized weight room, which is a madhouse in the mornings and just before dinner. Other renovation projects have taken precedence over the athletic facilities in the past, but luckily they are next on the list. The two newest buildings on campus, Tutt Science Center and Cornerstone Arts Center, are LEED-certified green buildings, and the College has promised that all future projects will be, as well, something students feel passionately about. Cornerstone, a project costing more than $30 million, is a beautiful example of modern architecture that serves as a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary teaching and performance space. The students who have the opportunity to use it love the building and the creativity it allows. Everyone else mostly wonders if it was worth the expense.

The sciences also have wired classrooms and top-of-the-line equipment. Other students attend classes in small rooms that encourage group interaction as opposed to long lectures. Most CC facilities are built comfortably, keeping the small size of the school in mind. Classrooms are rarely packed, due mostly to the school’s self-imposed class-size limit of 25 students. Perhaps the greatest “facility” that CC offers isn’t on the campus itself, but two miles to the west: the Rocky Mountains. If the gym is too small, students can go for a hike or mountain bike ride. If the classroom gets cramped, professors can take their students for an overnight to the CC Cabin, set in the foothills 25 miles away, or the Baca campus, a beautiful remote desert getaway in Southern Colorado. CC facilities, in short, are hit or miss, but they are sufficient for the small number of students and their large variety of activities.

The Campus Is Nice

The athletic centers are great and the main one is going to be renovated soon. The library is a pretty good place to study and there are plenty of computers and resources there. There is something on campus for everyone to do and all kinds of clubs. In general, it's a pretty great campus to be on.

Architecturally Unique

CC has made an effort over the years to vary the styles of architecture of the buildings while still ensuring cohesiveness that really is uniquely beautiful. Modern buildings such as Cornerstone and Tutt Science Center have clean, crisp designs and are were built with environmental friendliness in mind (both are LEED certified). Older buildings like Palmer are gorgeous too. The few buildings from the 60's and 70's aren't nearly as pretty but are still perfectly functionable. Worner Campus Center is close to all 3 major freshmen dorms and houses 2 dining areas, a coffee stand, student mailboxes, a small workout room, a small computer lab, arts studios, an art gallery, and several offices upstairs. There are also comfy couches and study and meeting spaces. The gym has a climbing wall, which is fairly popular, and there's also an ice rink that hosts $1 skating at certain times of the day. The library is nice enough and fairly large - only complaint is that is doesn't stay open 24/7 for occasional all-nighters and sometimes gets crowded and loud during the hectic 4th week of the block.

If You Didn't Want to You Probably Don't Need to Leave

It is a residential campus so you have everything you need. The athletic centers and gym are run down and don't have that great of hours. Food is good and accessible with a ton of options for such a small school. There is a traditional dining hall, two restaurants, a coffee shop, and a grocery store. The library is outdated but has computers and free printing which is great. Also has tons of study spots and the Quantitative Reasoning Center and Writing Center that are great resources for help with quantitative courses and any step in the writing process. Being a student tutor is also a great work study job. The older parts of campus and newer parts of campus are beautiful, while the buildings from the mid 20th century leave something to be desired.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

Colorado College has been very proactive in developing "green" initiatives on campus, probably because this is an issue the student body cares a lot about. The Sustainability Council has a campus-wide plan to reduce water and energy usage. A 22-kilowatt solar array was installed in one of the apartment buildings in 2008 and helps the campus reduce its non-renewable energy usage. The recycling program is ubiquitous, and waste reduction is a priority. Students are often involved in these efforts, and the campus is getting "greener" every year.

Favorite Things To Do

The campus would probably be empty on sunny days if not for the difficult workload that most students have. The student body is highly active, and nearly everybody loves the outdoors, especially in early fall and spring. Hiking and mountain biking trails, fly fishing and rock climbing, are all within a 15-minute drive from campus. Most of the students study outside, though not much gets done there—the quad is usually packed with pickup games of ultimate Frisbee, baseball, and an array of other sports. The grassy expanse at the center of campus also plays host to several concerts during the spring, from rock to ska to guitar soloists. Several different groups on campus have also brought interesting speakers to discuss issues, such as the conflict in the Middle East and the war on drugs. The English department sponsors a series of poetry and fiction readers, and the weekly coffeehouse open mic is an event that can't be missed.

Most CC activities take place outdoors: hiking, climbing, and mountain biking (and of course skiing) are all favorites for the typical CC student. On campus, students spend time at the climbing wall, playing Frisbee or football outside, or taking in one of the many cultural events that CC sponsors. The dance adjuncts provide another outlet for energetic students. When forced indoors by snow or darkness, students may opt to watch one of the many student productions. A student improvisation group, TWIT, performs for the student body on the Monday before each block’s final exam. Theater Workshop, the student-run theater group, provides endless amounts of edgy, interesting entertainment. The Arts & Crafts program, which teaches a variety of—you guessed it—arts and crafts, is a welcome route to creative self-expression. The Student Activities Office in the Worner Center maintains schedules for the many events held on campus each block.
