Grads Entering Job MarketAdvice
- Colorado College’s faculty and staff make it an explicit goal to prepare their students for the real world. Their philosophy is you can teach students everything you want, but if they don’t know how to get a job, that information is pretty worthless. The most important resource for any CC student is the Career Center. Located on the second floor of the Worner Center, this office is chock-full of internship and job listings, résumé writing manuals, and friendly people who are always willing to help. The key to getting a good job or internship—be it for the summer or the rest of your life—is to actually use all of these resources. Take advantage of everything, even the people; they’re there to help, so talk to them, and ask any question you have, no matter how mundane. You never know where a random conversation could lead you. • Get to know the folks at the Career Center early. • Utilize the portfolio option to gather references and résumé info. • Look for an internship for the summer after freshman or sophomore year. • Check your CC e-mail to keep up-to-date on career center activities. • Have adventures with your block breaks and summers. (Look in the Summer Jobs books for inspiration.) • Go to résumé and cover letter writing workshops, no matter how much you think you know. • Don’t limit yourself to jobs and internships that “fit” in your major. Branch out and find something new. • The Summer Job Search: Start looking first semester. That way, you have enough time for applications and interviews during second semester.
