Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Develop a relationship with one or two faculty members during freshman year.
  • Don’t worry about getting a single room freshman year.
  • Even if you don’t play sports, play intramural sports.
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities ASAP.
  • Getting an “A” isn’t always the most important thing in the world.
  • Go to as many speakers/theatre/music events as you possibly can.
  • How to “skim” through a book and still understand it.
  • How to write a good paper (not just a five-paragraph essay).
  • Never skip TWIT or the a cappella performances—no matter what.
Tips to Succeed
  • Ask upperclassmen for advice on professors and classes.
  • Come into CC with an open mind and don't be afraid to try new classes. Getting your heart set on a certain major from the beginning may leave you disappointed.
  • Don’t get bogged down in schoolwork; find other activities to balance your life.
  • Don’t go to parties every night—no matter how many of your friends are going.
  • Find a place and time to study where you won’t get distracted by friends.
  • Find something you love to study and pursue it.
  • Get outdoors in the afternoons and on the weekends.
  • Keep an open mind, and don’t lock yourself into a major right away.
  • Learn how to manage your time.
  • Schedule lab classes for times you know you won’t have many other time commitments.
  • Start assignments early whenever possible.
  • Take advantage of block breaks to relax your body and mind.
  • Talk to professors if you have questions, even if they intimidate you.
  • Use tutoring resources, like the WC (Writing Center) and the Quantitative Reasoning Center.

The Jew of CC: the Block Plan

As a student who never really loved dividing his attention between classes, I consider CC's Block Plan to be a godsend. Being able to devote myself to solely one subject makes learning fun and managable. Futhermore, the Block Plan is fantastic for taking occasional class field trips and for studying abroad.

However, the Block Plan does calls for lucubration every once in a while, but that's an important skill to have anyway. Besides, no matter how hard a particular class is, all one has to do is survive 3.5 weeks of it.

Most Overlooked Party School

Work hard, play hard mentality. Students excel academically, but know how to blow off steam as well, if not better than many nationally ranked party schools

Social Scene...WIN

CC has a fantastic party scene. Like most schools, parties are a big deal, but CC adds its own twist. If you're a fan of spandex, sequins, and all things 80s, or maybe just coming up with creative outfits for creative party themes, then CC is certainly right for you. The senior calendar, which is put out (for seniors only, but it makes its way around) 1st and 8th block plans one to three themed parties every night for the block, and that's a lot of fun. Free midnight breakfast at Rastall is put on once a block (which is fantastic for people with drunchies, or just people who could use some pancakes without using dining dollars). The types of people in general at CC are down to earth, happy, friendly people. "Work hard, play hard" would also be an appropriate mantra for CC students

Facts

Traditions
  • Dance Workshop: CC is filled with artistically-minded people who have chosen to study biology, chemistry, or other such inartistic subjects, and thus have few opportunities to express themselves. Dance Workshop is a dance exhibition put on every semester. Students organize and choreograph the different programs, and practice tirelessly the last two blocks of the semester. The result is a beautiful medley of dances, from ballet to modern jazz to tap.
  • Drag Ball : Once a year, the men at CC become gorgeous women, and the women become hunky men. The Drag Ball lets it all hang out, as students compete—runway style—for prizes. Professional drag queens set the bar high, and the students enthusiastically respond to the challenge by switching genders—or at least clothes—for a night.
  • The Glass House Cultural Xplosion : The Glass House, being the multicultural house, began a tradition of putting on a block party that celebrates the different cultural heritages of the students. It’s always a colorful night, filled with wild music and even wilder dancing.
  • Harley Party : Each year, the Sigma Chi fraternity throws this bash for the entire campus. Students dress as Hell’s Angels and other Harley Davidson-riding gangs.
  • Honors Ceremony : Near the end of each school year, the entire College gathers to honor its brightest in Shove Chapel. Each department gives out awards to exemplary students who have shown dedication to their studies and to learning in general.
  • Honors Convocation: Many students sleep through this ceremony, as it begins at 8:30 a.m. on the first day of classes. The annual ceremony is worth at least one trip, though; the school gives honorary degrees to outstanding CC alumni, and the keynote speaker livens up the morning with jokes and true stories from the “real world.”
  • Llamapalooza: Every spring, the school sponsors an outdoor concert (weather permitting) on the school’s grassy expanse, the Quad. School music groups contract local bands and some national acts to play the all-day-into-the-night festival, as students lounge on couches brought from the dorms. The school always provides a good variety of tunes, although the music sometimes takes a back seat to the rest of the impromptu activities going on around the green grass.
  • Psychedelic Bowling: The fraternities invite the campus to come bowling at midnight at an alley near CC. The games and shoes are cheap, but it’s the pitchers of beer that empty most students out. Money goes to charity.
  • Senior Parties : Seniors don’t plan on getting much studying done during the first and last blocks of the year. At the beginning of these blocks, the president of the class hands out a “Senior Party Calendar,” assigning a theme and location for a party every night. Some of the highlights are “Pirates and Booty” and “Go Geek.”
  • Theatre Workshop : While the drama department puts on several productions each year, Theatre Workshop provides an outlet for smaller pieces. This primarily student-run organization dabbles in many play styles, and their pieces should never be missed.
  • TWIT: During each block, a group of student comedians puts on an improvisational comedy show. The cast is forever changing, and the jokes seem to get raunchier every time. The shows are always funny, though, and always worth the hour break from studying.
Urban Legends
  • A few years back when the Mathias dorm was an all-sophomore dorm, the students decided to stage a revolt against the residence staff and take over the dormitory.
  • A number of members of a campus fraternity were once on the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted list for dealing out of their fraternity house and using a helicopter to ferry drugs in from South America.
  • Colorado College is the subject of the movie "PCU." The rumor is that the creators of the film are CC grads and based their ultra-politically correct campus on their alma mater.
  • The school cafeteria, Rastall, serves meat labeled “Grade F, Suitable for Prisons.”
  • Women don’t live in the sorority houses because a Colorado Springs law dictates that any house with more than six females living together without a male is a brothel.
