College Prowler Take

For such a small, homogeneous city, Colorado Springs has built up quite an impressive array of dining options, many of which are just a quick jaunt off campus. Tejon Street, which is Downtown has the greatest concentration of restaurants lined up conveniently on three city blocks. These trendy restaurants attract the business crowd for weekday lunches, but only get really packed on Friday and Saturday nights. When students aren’t sure what they want—only that they want a break from campus food—they walk up and down Tejon, choosing among homemade Italian pizzas and calzones at Il Vicino, spicy Mexican burritos at Jose Muldoon’s, a quick Reuben sandwich at the Broadway Café, or (if their parents are in town) a $50 steak dinner at Mac Kenzie’s. Just off Tejon you’ll find more international treats, the most delicious being the Tibetan Restaurant, which serves up buttery garlic naan bread with tastebud tantalizing curries. Students find their way here at lunch hour for the all-you-can-eat Tibetan buffet.

For the dessert lovers (and aren’t we all?), Colorado Springs offers three delectable eateries. Coldstone has two locations on Academy and a newly opened spot on Tejon, where customers pick out their own ice cream and toppings, and then devour their creation. Closer to campus, Downtown is home to a pair of dessert-only locales, each of which has its own sugary specialty. Michelle’s prepares classic sundaes and unbelievably rich cakes and pies. The all-time student favorite for desserts is undoubtedly Josh and John’s, an alum-owned ice cream shop that serves homemade flavors with a Ben & Jerry’s atmosphere. Eating off-campus is a great way for students to break the routine of the few on-campus dining options. The choices are many and students will be hard-pressed to find a bad dish.

Off-campus restaurants are great. You can choose from all different types and nationalities. There are plenty of cheaper places for starving students, as well as higher-end places for the occasional special treat.

Restaurants off-campus are, in one word, ‘awesome.’ There’s a wide variety of food with great tastes and reasonable prices. My personal favorite is Front Range Barbecue. For such a small town, food choices abound.
