Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Colorado College encourages students to live on campus through their junior year, so most students don’t have to worry about finding off-campus housing until their fourth year. When students begin their search, the first step is usually to ask senior friends who already have housing off campus. If senior friends aren’t helpful, the best way to find housing is to check bulletin boards around campus for house openings or simply go door to door, asking about rent and availability. Proactive students usually begin this process in March to assure that they’ll have enough time for several different inquiries. There are hardly ever problems finding housing, although some students do find themselves living more than five blocks away from campus. This may not seem like much, but compared to the five-minute walk from on-campus housing to academic buildings that students are used to, the commute from off campus can take some getting used to.

The cost of living off campus is relatively cheap and is almost always less expensive than living on campus. Houses and apartments are never fancy, but they’re usually clean and spacious, and landlords are generous with any needed repair and maintenance work. The perks of living away from the tiny CC campus include freedom from mandatory meal plans and a sense of personal space after living in community dorms for two or three years. Come senior year, nearly all students are ready for this new experience, and few are ever disappointed with what they get.

Good Options Close to Campus, Older--Historic Houses, Apartments Hard to Come by

On-campus housing seems to be most popular at CC because only Seniors are allowed to live off campus. There are a variety of students houses and options located close to CC and the downtown Colorado Springs area, however when choosing an off-campus house I would NEVER go beyond the CC bubble. Colorado Springs as a whole is vastly different from CC with the military, born-again, Focus-On-The-Family, overly religious vibe. If you start looking early, it can be easy to find off-campus housing. It is less-expensive than on-campus housing, but the quality is not as nice.

Hella Cheap

Rents in the Springs are dirt cheap, with most students pitching in usually less than $400 for a personal bedroom in the great old traditional homes in the conveniently located neighborhood of Wahsatch and Weber. House parties are regular and fun, especially since many houses have yards and most students live near other students. Compared to living on campus, living off-campus is a dream. Why can a CC student and his or her friends get a nice house for cheap? It's the lighter side of what a dead city Colorado Springs is.
