College Prowler Take
Campus security is an issue for CC students, especially the female population. Colorado Springs isn’t necessarily a dangerous town, but there have been enough cases of serious crime to keep some students on edge. Many young women will tell you that they don’t feel safe walking across campus at night, even though the principal section of campus is less than a square block. Most commonly, students complain about the lack of light on campus and the slow call response time of CC security. Additionally, and perhaps not fairly, CC students accuse security personnel of being too old to complete some of their main functions as security guards.
Regardless of the validity of claims of old age and senility, security is one of the College’s weakest points. Security patrols are few and far between at night, when most serious crimes occur. Patrollers putt around in golf carts with weak lights, but there are simply too many nooks and crannies on campus for this to be considered effective.

I feel extremely secure on campus, which I owe to my naiveté. The security guards on campus are elderly for the most part and slow to respond to a situation. |

Security is a little odd—at one time, they offered escort services to people that were walking alone at night. They discontinued it for some reason, and when we requested that it be reinstated, they threw a big fit. All-in-all, it’s not very effective in making me feel safe. |

I feel safe here. Like any college, we do have safety issues, but there are security services available. If you don’t feel safe walking home at night, you can always give them a call. |

Sometimes I see security guards, but they aren’t very prominent on campus. It seems like there’s almost always a person at the front desks of the dorm buildings, though, watching who comes in and leaves. That makes me feel a little bit safer. |

Security on campus is adequate for a community our size. At times, dealing with them can be frustrating, but for the most part, they do what they can with the resources available to them. |
Did You Know?
CC recently installed the blue-light system—emergency callboxes, made visible by a blue light, directly connected to campus security—and plans to increase lighting around campus parking areas. The large residence halls use card-swipe systems and front desk attendants to prevent public access.
