Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As far as Ivy League colleges go, Columbia boasts that it is by far the most diverse. Many languages are spoken across campus, and most cultural or religious groups have clubs or organizations to preserve and celebrate their identity. Despite representing many countries and ethnicities, Columbia still remains a college of the caucasian persuasion.

Columbia succeeds in being diverse, but interestingly, the desire to succeed is a value that transcends race, nationality and class. The school is located in New York City, which offers more diversity than probably any other location in the United States. With over eight million people and hundreds of languages spoken, finding a people, a culture, or a lifestyle is not far away.

Accepting & Diverse

Lots of different ethnicities. The most represented ethnic groups are white and Asian but these do not make up a heavy majority. Everyone seems to mix well.

Diverse and Tolerant

It could always stand to be more diverse and get a broader range of students, but compared to most schools (and certainly compared to where I'm from) it has a great diversity of ethnicity/race (especially internationally), a decent one economically, a decent one politically (lots of liberal people but as a left-wing person I still feel reluctant to say anything forceful about politics), and outstanding sexual orientation-wise. Almost everyone I've encountered is at the very least tolerant and somewhat open-minded, as much as you need to have a pretty comfortable community.

One of the Most Diverse Schools in the U.S.

If you like a lot of diversity on campus, then CU is for you. You name the student organization and they have it here. There are a very large number of foreign transfer students here as well (my Russian roommate happens to be one). Many students coming from Asian countries, like China, find this to be one of the best schools to attend I hear.

I think offering so many transfer students the opportunity to study here is good but it also makes the classes notoriously challenging to register for, even during the early registration window. Also, the campus feels kind of crowded at times...

There really aren't any issues with diversity here, regardless of the context one chooses to frame it in; whether economic, political, or sexual. Columbia prides itself on being a leader in global diversity and succeeds quite famously.

Facts

Gay Pride

Columbia is a fairly liberal school in a very diverse city, so there aren’t many problems with gay tolerance.

Political Activity

Columbia tends to be a liberal campus, although there are pockets of conservative strongholds that thrive, as well. Because of the history of the last few years, in New York and internationally, Columbia kids have gotten more involved and outspoken concerning their beliefs and opinions. You can find much of it on the opinion page of the Spectator every day.

Economic Status

A lot of Columbia kids come from privileged backgrounds, but there’s also a large number of students on financial aid from different countries and walks of life.

Most Common Religions

Judaism and Christianity

Minority Clubs on Campus

The following give an idea of the minority clubs at Columbia, but there are many, many, more (see the Student Organizations sections): Association of Columbia
