Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As far as Ivy League colleges go, Columbia boasts that it is by far the most diverse. Many languages are spoken across campus, and most cultural or religious groups have clubs or organizations to preserve and celebrate their identity. Despite representing many countries and ethnicities, Columbia still remains a college of the caucasian persuasion.

Columbia succeeds in being diverse, but interestingly, the desire to succeed is a value that transcends race, nationality and class. The school is located in New York City, which offers more diversity than probably any other location in the United States. With over eight million people and hundreds of languages spoken, finding a people, a culture, or a lifestyle is not far away.

Amazingly Diverse Community

When most people think of an Ivy League school like Columbia, they probably imagine a bunch of rich white kids who got in on legacy connections. While that population definitely exists, the majority of the school's population is amazingly diverse. People from literally all over the world come to study at Columbia, as demonstrated by the various unidentifiable languages one hears while walking across campus. This is also reflective of New York City as a whole, which is just as famously diverse.

Evidence of Diversity Everywhere

At Columbia University, diversity is huge. In one class you could have twenty different races alone. It's great to be able to meet people of such different backgrounds.

Facts

Gay Pride

Columbia is a fairly liberal school in a very diverse city, so there aren’t many problems with gay tolerance.

Political Activity

Columbia tends to be a liberal campus, although there are pockets of conservative strongholds that thrive, as well. Because of the history of the last few years, in New York and internationally, Columbia kids have gotten more involved and outspoken concerning their beliefs and opinions. You can find much of it on the opinion page of the Spectator every day.

Economic Status

A lot of Columbia kids come from privileged backgrounds, but there’s also a large number of students on financial aid from different countries and walks of life.

Most Common Religions

Judaism and Christianity

Minority Clubs on Campus

The following give an idea of the minority clubs at Columbia, but there are many, many, more (see the Student Organizations sections): Association of Columbia
