College Prowler Take

As far as Ivy League colleges go, Columbia boasts that it is by far the most diverse. Many languages are spoken across campus, and most cultural or religious groups have clubs or organizations to preserve and celebrate their identity. Despite representing many countries and ethnicities, Columbia still remains a college of the caucasian persuasion.

Columbia succeeds in being diverse, but interestingly, the desire to succeed is a value that transcends race, nationality and class. The school is located in New York City, which offers more diversity than probably any other location in the United States. With over eight million people and hundreds of languages spoken, finding a people, a culture, or a lifestyle is not far away.

I feel like I have a very diverse group of friends, however, at the same time, I feel that many of the minority groups can be very cliquish. Though there are large numbers of minorities on campus, there is not always that much interaction between the different groups.

I think that Columbia is the most diverse school in the Ivy League, and it’s apparent from the very first second you step on campus. The only thing about Columbia is that sometimes, people tend to get into cliques, but if you’re open to making all sorts of friends, then it won’t be a problem.

Facts

Economic Status

A lot of Columbia kids come from privileged backgrounds, but there’s also a large number of students on financial aid from different countries and walks of life.

Gay Pride

Columbia is a fairly liberal school in a very diverse city, so there aren’t many problems with gay tolerance.

Minority Clubs

The following give an idea of the minority clubs at Columbia, but there are many, many, more (see the Student Organizations sections): Association of Columbia

Most Common Religions

Judaism and Christianity

Political Activity

Columbia tends to be a liberal campus, although there are pockets of conservative strongholds that thrive, as well. Because of the history of the last few years, in New York and internationally, Columbia kids have gotten more involved and outspoken concerning their beliefs and opinions. You can find much of it on the opinion page of the Spectator every day.
