Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Consensus among students regarding drugs is that if you want them, you can get them. Caffeine is the drug of choice, but alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana are not far behind. Harder drugs are not unheard of, and they are very possible to attain, but they are not as visible, and unless you’re sniffing them out, you’d never know cocaine, ecstasy, or acid were present. Study drugs are rumored to thrive in certain disciplines. Use and abuse of alcohol and marijuana runs rampant on weekends or during slow periods, but because of the dedication of the student body, few students are willing to risk their academic future by partying too hard during the school week.

For those who do not wish to imbibe or get stoned, you do not have to be exposed to those things if you choose your friends wisely; however, it is commonplace to see the squarest of students guzzling vodka and/or sharing a joint at a party. Despite the fact that many students cut loose with some kind of substance, nobody will mock you if you opt out. Columbia is chock full of very hard-working ambitious kids who would choose a good night’s sleep over seven Kamikazes and a hangover that won’t allow any reading to get done the next day.

Drugs at Columbia Exist

The administration turns their back to illegal drug and alcohol use even when reported. I know; I reported a CC student and nothing happened. In fact I was threatened if I filed a police report. However, if drugs are brought to the attention of the media, the school will act. In December of 2010, some students were busted for selling drugs by an NYPD sting. The story made the headlines in NYC. The school expelled the students, even though what they were doing was nothing compared to other students who were reported to the administration and campus security. Columbia is extremely hypocritical.

The Scene Is There but There's No Pressure :)

I am a firm believer that it is COMPLETELY possible on this campus to have a fantastic social life without partaking if that's not your thing. Also, before I came here I was worried about there being a lack of a party scene, but that's untrue. These substances are totally available if you seek them out. All the freshman dorms are dry, but that is entirely unenforced. There is no peer pressure here though, because many students are pretty straight-edge, but they still have fun! I'd say a large percentage of students do drink however. Also, there is a campus ambulance that will pick you up free of charge as many times as you need if you are sick from whatever, including alcohol. Lastly, the campus is pretty good about not ratting the students out if they are underage.

No Pressure

Plenty of my friends don't drink or do drugs, and they never feel pressured to. If you want something you can find it, but if you want to stay clear that's perfectly viable too.
