Advice

  • The Career Center at Columbia has a lot of meetings and workshops, but most importantly, they have a comprehensive Web site of job listings. Employers looking for smart kids usually list on Columbia’s Web site, which usually has 20 new listings during off-peak hiring moments, and up to 100 if it’s internship season, which starts in February and lasts clear on through April. You can have someone critique your résumé at drop-in hours or attend many of the job fairs they arrange in Lerner Hall. Columbia is a great professional choice, even for undergrads, because you have fascinating work opportunities available to you in the big city. The Career Center definitely helps you take advantage of them. The Career Services Web site always has good job listings, but that’s only half the battle. Don’t expect the fact that you go to Columbia to get you a job. You have to look professional and act professional (a lot of New York employers can be wary of snobby Ivy Leaguers, so watch that it doesn’t work against you). Take advantage of interviewing workshops at CU if you’re not so comfortable in interview situations.
