Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although most students believe that Columbia is not the place to find lots of hotties, they seem to agree that both the men and women who attend are rather attractive. The place on campus to spot the certifiable hotties is the gym, but people also seem to find visual fulfillment at the local bars around campus or down in Soho. It is not unheard of to have some lookers in class, too. There is, of course, all of New York City to ogle.

Many students say that they came to Columbia to study, not to focus on romance, and they are unfazed by the school’s reputed lack of eye candy. That said, the students are usually ambitious and interesting, so sometimes mental attraction is more possible, and even sought after. Likewise, there’s plenty of hooking up going on at Columbia and serious relationships, as well. If you seek it, you can probably find it. There are all types here, from the high-maintenance princesses, to the shower-and-wear-jeans crowd. There are always some great-looking people around campus. You just have to keep your eyes open for whoever melts your butter.

Just Right

There is a decent amount of good-looking people at Columbia... some very good-looking people. Lots of these types of people are pretty social and easy to meet, starting freshman year, at bars, frats, special event parties, and more casually, in class, around your dorm, at the library, or at the gym. If you want to be social, it is really easy to be social and meet lots of fun people who actually have both great looks and good personalities. There isn't a lot of dating here, mostly hooking up, but maybe dating comes a bit later. I love the social life here in comparison to other fratty, huge schools. I feel like I know so many of the people, have plenty more to meet, and I honestly love how adult it feels to go out to bars and nice parties almost every night of every weekend.

Passionate Students and Lots of Clubs

You'll find all sorts of people here. Also, many students turn to clubs in order to fill any gaps in their social life, so Columbia students are generally very passionate about things. Basically, students are very diverse, so it's not like the population is homogenous. As far as fashion goes: this is not an Uggs and sweatpants college. We are laid-back but still, we wear real clothes.

The guy scene is tough from a woman's point of view; easily a large percentage of men are gay, while the straight ones are shared with Barnard women across the street. The girls are not bad either, and they are abundant.

Columbia's "Characters"

There are a few notably well-dressed individuals on campus who fit the typical "fashionable New Yorker" look. For the most part, everyone has their own style. In terms of personalities, the average Columbian is what I'd like to call a "character". You can find pretty much any type from Cthulhu worshipping sci-fi nerds to passionate Socialists to drag queen divas. Nearly everyone I've met here is uniquely interesting if you take the time to get to know them. When it comes to relationships, hook-ups occasionally happen and some friends are able to maintain long distance relationships, so it's really up to each person.

Facts

Social Scene

Drinking is what people do at Columbia, if they have any social life at all. Most bars in the area draw a specific crowd, so you have a pretty good idea of who you'll see based on where you go. But the bonus about going to school in New York is when you tire of area bars (or if you never wanted to drink in the first place), there's a whole city out there to explore and entertain yourself with.

Hookups or Relationships?

Like most colleges these days, Columbia isn't a place where people date. Serious relationships are not an anomaly, but few claim to have met the love of their life at CU. Hookups happen, although some might claim that some of the nerdier students are too gunshy to be as free-lovin' as kids at other schools.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Your friends and lovers will come mostly from your participation in extracurricular activities, whether it's debate or drama.

Dress Code

Columbia has room for all kinds—the indie rockers, the label whores, even the Abercrombie lovers have their support at Columbia. You can wear what you want, but for the most part, it's a laid-back jeans kinda place.
