Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students feel safe at Columbia. It would be difficult not to, since Columbia security and the NYPD have such a high profile on campus. While it is possible for almost anyone to get on campus, access to certain buildings and all residence halls is restricted to those with a Columbia ID card. With escort services and emergency phones available, campus security excels at keeping students safe.

Simple common sense and street smarts are necessary to survive in any urban environment. Always be aware of your surroundings, and avoid dodgy places at night, especially the local parks. Trusting your instincts will often protect you—if you feel unsafe, it’s best to get out of the situation you’re in. Fortunately, there are plenty of police and security guards around Columbia to provide assistance in such a predicament. Even though the area surrounding the school has been gentrified, there are still some sketchy areas that should be avoided at night. You don’t want to make the mistake of getting on the wrong train and ending up in Harlem in the middle of the night. As safe as Columbia is, it is not a fortress void of any criminals. Keep your wits about you, and keep your distance from the local panhandlers. Most are harmless, but you never know.

Unsafe School

Murders, rapes, harassment, theft are all common at Columbia University. The school borders one of the worst neighborhoods in New York City. Campus security is a joke.

Crime's Been Creeping Around

Last semester we had quite a few attempted robberies of students one street away from my dorm. Luckily, Columbia's public safety team has been working harder to patrol the area constantly.

Personal Safety

In general, students at Columbia University are very well sheltered within the university and in the surrounding area especially on Broadway street. There has been news of some thefts within campus and off-campus but it is not frequent. Students just need to be careful of their belongings, that is all. Other than that, walking alone back to dormitory late at night is still safe on Broadway street.
