Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are only a few places in the world that have as wonderful a variety of food as New York. Within just a few blocks of campus there are pizza places, sushi bars, Italian restaurants, diners, cafés and just about everything you can imagine. And that’s just what’s in the local neighborhood. Then there’s the rest of the city.

Everyone has his or her own favorite local haunt, but the West End and Caffé Taci are two of the best. One special thing about New York is that almost every restaurant delivers until at least midnight, so you don’t even have to leave your room to have some great food brought to your doorstep. For students on the go, there’s always a local place to get a sandwich, wrap, or a salad. Brunch is really big in New York, and although many hot spots are crowded, they are often worth the wait. Don’t be afraid to experiment with ethnic cuisines. In this city, you can get what you want whenever you want it. As far as food goes, it does not get any better than New York City.

Endless

Restaurants are probably what NYC has the most of. The Union Square area, which is where many of the NYU dorms are located, has a lot of great places to eat. Republic is one of my favorites, it’s a noodle shop. Zen Palate is also here; it’s vegetarian but it’s great. A lot of places are trendy but good. Oh, and Republic is cheap with moderate prices for drinks, too, by NYC standards.

Morningside Heights

We've got a lot of good options right in Mo-Hi. For example, Artopolis has amazing crepes for under ten dollars, which if you split with a friend (they are enormous), is a pretty good deal. Crumbs recently opened if you need a cupcake fix, there's a Pinkberry, Chipotle, and 5 Guys if you crave fast-food and fro-yo. Head to Tom's for a delicious Broadway Shake and to Koronet's for a big slice of cheap pizza. There are numerous ethnic choices as well, try Massawa for a unique Ethiopian/Eritrean dining experience, as well as the Mill for tasty Korean options. Then again, there is always Westside Market with delicious and tasty salads and sandwiches. Prices are great if you know what to get and where to go.

A Bite from the Big Apple

Take one step off campus, and you're surrounded by two things- restaurants and book shops! In terms of restaurants, there's a little bit of everything, but then, what did you expect? It's New York City!

Close to campus, there's Ollie's, a popular Chinese restaurant that's not completely wonderful- but, it makes up for the taste with the price. Very cheap! Also, we have Tom's Diner (the one from Seinfeld) if you like the touristy thing, and about a million little asian shops scattered around everywhere.

My favorite though is probably the Halal cart on 115th and Broadway. The guy who runs it is super nice, and you get a full dinner for $5! Also, Koronet's on 111th is the best pizza place in Morningside. The slices are (literally) bigger than my head!

Not to forget, we also have the requisite Starbuck's on every corner, although Oren's Daily Roast serves a much better coffee if you don't mind a few extra minutes of walking.

Oh, and the Hungarian Pastry Shop on Amsterdam has free WiFi and AMAZING pastry! Bring your laptop and manage to snag a table, and you can make a cup of coffee and a Danish last through an entire 6 page paper!

Did You Know?

The exterior of Tom’s appears in Seinfeld, so watch out for tourists taking photos in front of it, but don’t expect the inside to look the same as on TV—they use a different location for the interior.
