Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There are only a few places in the world that have as wonderful a variety of food as New York. Within just a few blocks of campus there are pizza places, sushi bars, Italian restaurants, diners, cafés and just about everything you can imagine. And that’s just what’s in the local neighborhood. Then there’s the rest of the city.

Everyone has his or her own favorite local haunt, but the West End and Caffé Taci are two of the best. One special thing about New York is that almost every restaurant delivers until at least midnight, so you don’t even have to leave your room to have some great food brought to your doorstep. For students on the go, there’s always a local place to get a sandwich, wrap, or a salad. Brunch is really big in New York, and although many hot spots are crowded, they are often worth the wait. Don’t be afraid to experiment with ethnic cuisines. In this city, you can get what you want whenever you want it. As far as food goes, it does not get any better than New York City.

Tons of Places for College Students

Although you're in NYC, you are in a part of the city that is dominated by Columbia University. Therefore, there are a TON of local restaurants with fairly cheap prices within ten blocks of campus-- and I mean a TON. And there isn't only quantity: there's also quality. The food is delicious and is from tons of different cultural backgrounds.

There Could Be Better in NYC

Factoring in that Columbia is in the city, relative to the rest of Manhattan, the food in Morningside is at best mediocre. Absolut Bagels is good as well as Artopolis, Mill Korean, and the Chipotle nearby, but in general, good food is all found downtown near NYU.

Morningside Heights Is a "Culinary Wasteland"

While the city as a whole has tons of great dining options, Morningside Heights has few. There are a few options, ranging from dingy diner to upscale trendy restaurants. However, most options are too expensive for a college student's budget. That said, there are a few hidden gems. Saji's is a hole-in-the-wall Japanese place with great prices and consistently delicious food. Milano Market also has delicious (though pricy) sandwiches.

Did You Know? The exterior of Tom's appears in Seinfeld, so watch out for tourists taking photos in front of it, but don't expect the inside to look the same as on TV—they use a different location for the interior.
