Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New York has all four seasons, although the winter covers the largest part of the school year. The snow, ice, and wind are tough to take, especially for those students coming from warmer climates. For those staying on campus for the summer, the humidity is a problem and air conditioning isn’t always available. Fall and spring are short-lived and very enjoyable. Students seem to either love or hate the weather in New York. It is a source of both pleasure and pain, and some find the inconsistency to be a curse.

New York is often wet, regardless of the season. Surprise thunderstorms are known to pop up, and you end up looking like a drowned rat. Bring lots of layers; you’ll wear everything you own on a snowy winter’s day, and you’ll want to strip down to your Skivvies in the summer to beat the heat. Expect weather as diverse as the people in New York.

It's usually kind of crappy weather, but with a bit of luck global warming will help us out and it will slowly get warmer. This year we barely had a winter.

All Four Seasons

Personally, I love seasons, so the Northern climate with relatively hot summers and cold winters is fine for me. Campus is easy to navigate in general, and a little rain or snow doesn't change that. On the main campus, most of the walkways are brick, so if the weather isn't good, leave the heels at home, but otherwise, it's fine. The only real difficulty would be for anyone with a physical disability, because the wheelchair ramps and pathways aren't the best for navigation. I think Columbia should do a better job making campus more accessible to those with physical limitations, but it honestly isn't the worst, as there are ramps and elevators and campus is salted after snow in a very timely fashion.

It's Okay

Classes never get cancelled even if all other schools around get days off. Weather is just surprising here with either really freezing winters or just warm and mild winters. You never know what to expect.
