College Prowler Take
Connecticut College features centralized dining, which means that one dining hall, Harris Refectory, serves all-you-can-eat buffet style breakfast, lunch, and dinner to most of the campus. This near monopoly allows Harris to stay open from 7:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m. with only a ninety-minute break in the afternoon to prepare for dinner. By and large, the food is much better than average college fare, although it probably won’t make you miss Mom’s cooking. Students are locked into a meal plan at Conn, so there’s no reason not to take advantage of it. At least you’ll have variety. In addition to a hot main line, Harris has lines for everything from stir-fry to baked goods (no matter what, though, whatever’s in the main line goes into the soup the next day). With so much available, it’s easy to eat every meal on campus. Perennial crowd-pleasing dishes include the college’s eponymous concoctions, “Eggs McConn” and “Tortellini a la Conn.” Be on the lookout for special presentations by Dining Services, especially the much-anticipated lobster and steak dinner. These help break up what can otherwise be a fairly predictable meal schedule. For those who prefer a more intimate setting, there are five smaller dining halls, one of which strictly serves vegetarian and vegan meals. Wherever you go, the Dining Services staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. If you have any special requests—even if it’s just to request your favorite cereal—you can drop them a “Napkin Note,” and you’ll have a response in about two weeks. Of course, you can’t always get what you want, but it’s nice to know that your input is taken into consideration.

I would say that the food here is a lot better than other colleges. There are around six dining halls on campus, each of which servers different food. Conn has every kind of cereal, which is good when you're not in the mood for anything else! If you don't like the food at the dining halls, you can always eat at the "Cro" (the student center).

The places are okay. There's not a lot of choices, because the dining halls usually only serve the same things as each other, but there is one large dining hall and a few smaller ones. There's also a student snack shop, and we have money on our cards to buy food there. Almost everyone has a full meal plan, unless they live in an apartment (not a lot of people do) or have dietary restrictions.

The food on campus is acceptable, at best. I sometimes wish we could have better quality hot meals, but the hard economic times have hit our dining services department hard, so I can understand why they've had to cut back. Harris Refectory is in north campus ("the Plex"), it is the major dining hall on campus, and they have a certain kind of meal each day of the week for variety (quesadillas and cheese steak switch off every other Wednesday, Monday is taco night, etc.). I also enjoy eating at Smith House's dining hall because, as a resident of central campus, it has a very convenient and central location during the weekdays (I'm sure the residents of south campus would say the same about the Jane Addams dining hall). Overall, I'd say the food could be better, but it does the job for me in between my breaks when I get to enjoy Mom's cooking.

I have grown to really appreciate Conn's dining halls. Although the main entrees can be unappealing at times, the vegetarian line, egg maker, and salad bar make putting together a healthy meal easy. Harris is very accessible to the students and gives the ability to get creative with your meals. Soup and salad lunch and "make your own stir fry" in Freeman are amazing.

The food is adequate. It's hard being a vegetarian at the school, but I think it has made improvements about that since last year. I really appreciate having Freeman on campus as the vegetarian dining hall.
