Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Connecticut College is a residential campus, with approximately 99 percent of its students living on campus. As such, there is a wide variety of living options. Dorms are located all over campus, and where you’ll live depends a great deal on what area suits you best. North Campus features a community of six dorms, Central is at the heart of the campus, next to the library and student center, and South is right by College Green, Conn’s most heavily-trafficked and widely-used open space. In addition, there is lots of specialty housing at Conn. From substance-free housing in Blackstone to the apartment-style setup of River Ridge, you’re sure to find an arrangement that feels like home.

Dorms at Conn feel like little communities. Each has its own entirely student-run House Council, which manages day-to-day affairs and plans the dorm’s social events. The head of the House Council, the Housefellow, serves as a liaison between staff and students. If you’ve got a problem with something (or someone) in your room, chances are your Housefellow can point you in the right direction. The rooms can get cramped freshman year, but usually more than half the sophomore class gets singles. Juniors are virtually guaranteed their own rooms. Students leave their doors open, so it’s still easy to be sociable. The buildings are older, and while they are aesthetically pleasing on the outside, many could stand some renovations inside, especially in the community bathrooms. All of the bathrooms are coed, which some initially find strange. In any case, students are quick to make themselves at home and develop dorm pride.

They built new dorms recently which is nice and they try hard to put you with a good roommate.

Alternative Housing on Campus

Conn College has multiple options for alternative housing and theme housing on campus. I lived in Earth House, the environmentally friendly living house on campus for two years and found a family and a niche on campus. The experience of living with other like-minded, motivated students is greatly enriching to your own inspiration and productivity. The only downside is that there are limited opportunities for specialty housing and the application process is substancial enough that its a real bummer if you get rejected.

Most of the dorms around campus...

Most of the dorms around campus are really nice. Knowlton has the biggest rooms on campus. For some reason most people like the more traditional dorms and avoid going for North Campus.

Cleaning Service

Public areas and bathrooms are cleaned once a day. Bathrooms are typically not cleaned on weekends, meaning that if you live in a party dorm, you could end up sidestepping vomit and beer cans on your way to brush your teeth. Students in co-ops and apartment-style living arrangements do not have access to the cleaning services.

Did You Know?
  • Due to a recent change in Connecticut legislation, all of Conn's dorms are smoke-free.
  • Knowlton House served as an apartment for male visitors back when Connecticut College was an all-female school.
