Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Conn students love a good party, and it’s no secret to Campus Safety that underage drinking is par for the course on a typical Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night. Fortunately, Campus Safety generally will not hassle students who are drinking responsibly. They will, however, put the kibosh on excessively raucous parties and parties that spill out into the halls of dorms. If you are cooperative with them, the Campus Safety officers will let you get away with a warning nine times out of ten (they might make you pour out your Screwdriver). Technically, Campus Safety can’t search students’ rooms without a good reason, so you won’t be hassled by The Man while hosting a little get together. Campus Safety’s main focus is to keep the students safe. To that end, officers make rounds through the dorms on weekend nights, but they aren’t intrusive. Housefellows make rounds as well, but chances are that they will be even more lenient.

And then there are the kegs. Keg parties are very easy to throw at Conn. Once you’re of-age, all you need to do is attend a quick seminar. The problem is that a stipulation on keg parties requires the hosts to keep out underage students. Since it would probably be easier to keep out an invading army, keggers are often broken up by Campus Safety before they really get going. Otherwise, within reason, students are allowed to be college kids and make a few mistakes without serious consequences. A word of advice, though: do not get caught with candles or incense sticks in your room. Possession of these potential fire hazards can carry a whopping $150 fine.

Not Strict at All

Underage drinking is tolerated. There aren't really any repercussions for being caught doing it if your under 21. The school is pretty lenient on most things except parking.

Really Relaxed

As long as you don't walk around outside a dorm with something that blatantly looks like a beer can or bottle of alcohol and its in a waterbottle or some other type of container, you won't get in any trouble at all. Campus po rarely comes to break up dorm parties, and if they do usually only the people who hosted the party get in trouble and everyone else can just run off to find another party.

The campus seems fairly strict...

The campus seems fairly strict about the drinking, and especially the drug policies, but that has little effect on the drinking culture of the school. Those who want to party will find a way to party, and they do. However, the quiet dorms and substance-free dorms provide plenty of opportunities for those who do not want to participate - or for those who want to participate but be able to come back in the evenings to a quiet dorm!
