Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Diversity is difficult to measure at Connecticut College. While the school can’t boast a high percentage of nonwhite students like some of its peer institutions, the spirit of diversity is at the heart of the Conn experience. Almost daily, there are dialogues, lectures, and presentations on topics ranging from affirmative action, to white privilege, to the experience of interracial dating on campus. The cultural groups are completely inclusive in their membership and are a strong force on campus life. There is even talk of including a diversity class in the General Education requirements, which would require students to take a class about another culture before they graduate. Simply put, Conn values diversity and is aware of the importance of race and culture in all aspects of students’ education.

Students do have a point when they complain that the campus feels white, which at times can lead to homogeneity of option. Conn certainly needs to take a hard look at diversity in its faculty in order to increase the different perspectives that students are exposed to in the classroom. But to only complain is to close your eyes to the benefits Conn has to offer. Because of its small size, it would take self-segregation to attend Conn for four years and not befriend students, faculty, and staff from different cultures around the world. And when you want to go to study in another part of the world, there are some incredible study abroad options available.

Where Are We Heading?

I would say that more increasingly issues regarding discrimination and diversity have popped up on campus, and the administration doesn't seem to be dealing with it all that well, it seems like the student body only gets a few admonishing emails with regard to the issues. However, the amount of student diversity in terms of race socio-economic background and sexual orientation has increased substantially over the past few years and perhaps this is why we see the influx of discrimination. Perhaps the college hasn't figured out how to orient the groups of "majorities" and "minorities" to make the appropriate shifts with the institution.

diversity is improving

Honestly, it's true that there is a lack of diversity on campus. The thing is, the majority of students at Conn are very culturally aware and accepting. It's not the kind of environment in which you feel inferior for your race or ethnicity. Conn does a great job of connecting students to different cultures, so while I would say that diversity needs improvement, it's not a huge issue.

White boys, white girls, the occasional sprinkling of another ethnicity. Not a complete sea of white, but approaching it.

Facts

Gay Pride

The campus is very accepting of all sexual orientations and transgender and questioning students. A student group called Sexual Orientations United for Liberation (S.O.U.L.) acts as supporting group for its members.

Political Activity

The political temperature of Connecticut College is decidedly liberal, but many students are apathetic and apolitical. The most active political groups are the College Democrats, the College Republicans, and the outspoken CC LEFT.

Economic Status

Conn is a very expensive school, so most students predominately come from well-to-do backgrounds. Some of the students drive nicer cars than the faculty.

Most Common Religions

Most students are not outwardly religious, but there is a sizable population of Christians. Catholic masses, Protestant worship services, and Baptist Bible Study are held every week, as well as a Shabbat Dinner for the Jewish community. Other religions represented include Hinduism, Islam, and paganism.

Minority Clubs on Campus

It's impossible to miss Conn's minority groups because they constantly sponsor lectures, dialogues, dances, parties, and vigils. Some current minority groups are ATLAS, CCASA, I-Pride, La Unidad, Umoja, and the USSC.
