Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Don’t come to Connecticut College looking for Animal House. Conn is simply too small to support a Greek system. In addition, Conn students typically don’t fit the frat brother/sorority sister mold. Of course, there are tradeoffs to a ban on Greek life. On the positive side, students feel that the social scene is more inclusive without it. The school puts on concerts and dances every week, which usually draw a sizable crowd of drunken students looking for a good time. These events give their inebriated participants a chance to (literally) bump into old friends and meet new people. On the negative side, parties at Cro lack the edge of a frat party. And as students get older, they adopt a “been there, done that” attitude toward the school-sponsored costume parties and luaus. A Greek system on campus would give students another alternative on weekend nights. Keg parties hosted by sports teams and a cappella groups attempt to fill this void with varying levels of success.

Despite any negatives, students unanimously reported loving the fact that there is no Greek life on campus. In fact, many said that they chose the school because of it. Cliques may run in social circles, but students enjoy knowing that they aren’t sanctioned and institutionalized in the form of fraternities and sororities. Although there isn’t a Greek life in place, Conn students couldn’t be happier with the arrangement.

There is no Greek life, which is one of the reasons I chose this school. I like the absence of Greek life, but sometimes I feel that the sports teams take the place of frats and sororities.

We don't have Greek life, which is good because we are such a small campus to begin with. It would divide the social life too much.
