Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Aside from a few isolated incidents of crime (usually perpetrated by New Londoners) and numerous student liquor referrals, Conn is a pretty safe and quiet school. Campus Safety patrols around-the-clock and maintains a high profile on campus. The single biggest threat to safety on campus is that students always leave the entrances to their dorms propped open. Every so often, this leads to a completely unnecessary and avoidable breach in security. Fortunately, Campus Safety is vigilant and just a phone call away. The school has also recently revamped the system for allowing students back into their dorms: While Campus Safety used to act as the only doormen, the school has now given this task to the housefellows and floor governors during most hours of the day.

On a more serious note, if a student notifies Campus Safety of an alcohol or drug overdose, the patient will be immediately treated and rushed to the hospital—no questions asked. Campus safety is primarily concerned with students’ well-being and will not severely discipline the patient or the reporter. This is done so that student won’t be reluctant going to Campus Safety during crises. Other safety services that Conn offers include Safewalk and blue light phones around campus. Conn has recently purchased all new blue lights phones to make sure they are in working order in case of an emergency. Overall, students feel safe walking around campus at night, especially with the knowledge that the college closes its gates at night and checks IDs for all incoming vehicles. The main paths and parking lots are sufficiently lit at night, but it never hurts to exercise caution when walking around campus in the wee hours of the morning.

Health and Safety of CT College

The safety and health of the college is very safe and sanitary. I believe if you were going to choose a college that followed safety for their students and made sure tehy were out of harms way, it would be Connecticut College.

We live on a extremely safe campus at Connecticut College. We have campus police who are there to patrol the campus and to keep the peace and intervene if things get out of hand, which rarely happens. Students abide by the Honor Code and are thus very respectful of peers and their environment. Aside from the occasional thefts and alcohol-involved incidents, I feel very safe and comfortable here.

There is petty theft, but Campus Safety tries very hard to make people aware of it, and it usually just occurs when things are left unattended. Campus Safety leaves us alone as long as you are discreet. I always feel safe.

Did You Know?
  • As part of a campus-wide concerted effort to renounce a series of anonymously committed racist acts on campus over the past few years, Campus Safety keeps a log of any bias incidents on Conn's intranet and immediately reports the situation and all actions taken to the campus community.
  • While on their rounds, Campus Safety officers find a ton of lost items. Everything from earrings to disks carrying that all-important term paper can be exhumed at the lost and found in Campus Safety's HQ, Nicols House.
