| Advice on Finding a Job/Internship | |
Making the transition from the familiar surroundings of Connecticut College to the alien “real world” can be daunting. Luckily, the CELS (Career Enhancing Life Skills) office is available to help from the moment you first arrive on campus. The CELS office offers a four-year program that takes students from the first tentative steps of planning a career to senior year job search assistance. Each semester, students are required to attend professional development seminars that teach job search techniques, networking skills, and résumé formatting. The highlight of the program is a stipend of $3,000 to fund any internship of each student’s choice between the summer of his junior and senior year. During senior year, students must complete a short integrative paper summarizing what they have learned throughout the program. Sign up for the program even if you know exactly what you want to do with your life. It’s the easiest way on campus to get a funded internship. Then make sure you attend all the seminars. Sure, they’re a pain, but if you don’t go, the school will take away your funding. It’s best not to burn bridges. You can always drop out of the program, but if ou miss a seminar or other requirement, you probably won’t be allowed back in. Plus, the ePortfolio is something you’ll have even after you graduate and is a handy tool for writing résumés.
