Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Unfortunately, the nightlife in New London is nothing to write home about. Although there is potential for the after-hours scene downtown, the city just has not capitalized on the possibilities. As the years go by, area hotspots fizzle out and go under, including the much-loved local watering hole, Station 58. The few good remaining bars, like Stash’s Café and the Oasis Pub are a welcome relief to the sometimes monotonous grind of Conn’s social life, but don’t expect nightlife nirvana.

True clubbing devotees may be forced to travel farther than normal in search of fun. Hartford and Providence are both popular destinations at roughly thirty and forty-five minutes away respectively. At two hours away, Boston and New York City are strictly for special occasions. More casual clubbers may find that the campus kegs and parties are enough to keep them occupied.

Get used to walking

There are themed Cro dances almost every weekend, which are fun to get dressed up for. People mostly only drink on Thursdays and Saturdays, but if you're the kind of person who likes to drink more often than that you'll definitely find people who do as well. It's not like there are any clubs nearby that are worth going to, but if you have a solid group of friends you'll have fun on the weekends anyway. Just be aware that you will have to walk a lot on nights when there are no Cro dances, because you generally just walk from dorm to dorm looking for parties.

Stay in the Dorm

Not much outside the campus but more people have been going to the bars recently which is a problem from those under 21. Most parties are still in dorm rooms.

Parties

No one really parties on the weekdays except for Thursdays because most don't have Friday classes. Many are mostly focused on their school work and then on Saturday is when they have fun and relax. The town that Connecticut College is located closes like around 6, so don't expect to find anything at night, except for maybe the gay club, but even then that can get boring at times.

Club Crawler

Unfortunately, the nightlife in New London isn’t anything to get excited about, but there are a few area spots worth checking out.

Organization Parties

The cultural groups on campus throw incredible parties every semester, which manage to be simultaneously educational and fun. Then there are the department parties. These rare gems, usually held in an intimate setting, are one of the few times students get to knock back a few cold ones with their professors. Department parties are held in honor of the students majoring and minoring in a specific department, but they are also billed as a chance for those “interested” in majoring or minoring in that department, so brazen students can waltz right in and score a few free drinks.

There are two billiard parlors nearby—Crown Billiards on Frontage Rd. and American Billiards on Long Hill Rd. in Groton. For live music, check out the Pogo Music Club in downtown Norwich. Fortunately, the majority of Conn’s social scene is concentrated in on-campus parties.
