Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Connecticut College is definitely not a commuter school. With guaranteed housing for four years and good odds of getting a single after freshman year, very few even consider hunting through the Classifieds. Social life really revolves around on-campus events, and there are meetings, sporting events, and lectures at all different times of the day. It would be difficult for a student to be very involved in campus life while living off campus. The urge to stay on campus is reinforced by the fact the immediate area of New London offers no great housing options, and can be a dangerous area to live.

On the whole, students are content with living on campus, but there are a few choices for those who decide to opt out. Groups of friends sometimes rent (and get a good deal on) summer houses in vacation areas like Stonington. Another alternative is the River Ridge Apartments, which are apartment style dorms technically on Conn’s campus,
but set far enough that they don’t feel like they are part of the school. River Ridge strikes a nice balance between on
and off campus living, but for students who really don’t want to live on campus—they will feel like a kid: Playskool “My
First Apartment.”

Conn Only Has on-Campus Housing

Hope you like your classmates, because you'll be living with them for four years.

Having only on-campus is very convenient, but it is a reminder that you are on a small campus and will inevitably see the same people everyday. There are some choices for housing that separate you from the main campus. These options include River Ridge Apartments, Abbey House, and Winchester House. These are great places to live for upperclassmen and allow you some separation from the main campus.

Something like 98% of students...

Something like 98% of students live on campus, so most students don't even think of off-campus housing. However, the Ridge Apartments are about a five-minute walk away and you apply through the school for those. In my opinion, it's really not worth it, everything is on campus, and you will just end up spending a lot of time walking.
