Hello Dance World!

The dance department at Connecticut College is unparalleled. It gives its student plenty support, open forum to discuss issues and a very strong sense of student voice and participation. The course load though vigorous provides dance training that yields strength and finesse within the technique. The curriculum is well rounded for both majors and minors and exposes its dancers to duties outside of just dancing such as technical work. The studio spaces a gorgeous and growing more and more beautiful by the day as the department continues to upgrade equipment. Not to mention that the department does all this while producing incredibly beautiful, high-quality, professional productions/shows. All on within a ridiculously small budget. Thank goodness for a very well connected faculty, especially department chair. Beyond being well connected the dance faculty are so well trained and amazing instructor. They push us to achieve the most we possibly can with our dance training (forcing us to work us and play harder) while building relationships with us that show their love and support. My favorite part of the department is that it is my family away from home in some many ways. We love, we disagree, we cry, and we laugh together, but we always remain close-knit and are there for one another when needed (as well as when the support is not needed ;] )

Get used to walking

There are themed Cro dances almost every weekend, which are fun to get dressed up for. People mostly only drink on Thursdays and Saturdays, but if you're the kind of person who likes to drink more often than that you'll definitely find people who do as well. It's not like there are any clubs nearby that are worth going to, but if you have a solid group of friends you'll have fun on the weekends anyway. Just be aware that you will have to walk a lot on nights when there are no Cro dances, because you generally just walk from dorm to dorm looking for parties.

A Great School

Conn is a great place if you want a small-school experience. If you are looking for a school that has a great night life and super exciting off-campus environment, then you should look elsewhere. However, you get to know people really well here, which makes for great friendships. The dorms are so much homier than any I've seen, and the facilities are great. The teachers are incredibly approachable, and get to know you as a person rather than just another face. People do party, and you can always find something fun to do with your friends both during the week and on the weekends. Not only are there lots of themed dances, but there are performances, talks, and events going on all the time.

diversity is improving

Honestly, it's true that there is a lack of diversity on campus. The thing is, the majority of students at Conn are very culturally aware and accepting. It's not the kind of environment in which you feel inferior for your race or ethnicity. Conn does a great job of connecting students to different cultures, so while I would say that diversity needs improvement, it's not a huge issue.

lots of freedom

Honestly, as long as you're not belligerent or throwing up all over the place, you're allowed to do what you want on this campus. People walk around with water bottles and cups and campus safety rarely does anything about it (the most they do is ask you to pour it out if you're being really obvious).

good food

The food in Harris is actually good. There will be days when you feel like you can't find something to eat, but you can always make yourself a good salad or sandwich. Most of the time, though, you'll find something to eat and it doesn't feel like you're always eating the same thing.

Amazing

There are minor things that some people may not like, such as the lack of sororities or no off-campus housing. Personally, I think it makes Conn feel more like a home. Students are so friendly and professors are always available. I have had multiple dinners at my teacher's houses, and I can walk into the dining hall and eat with anyone, even if they don't know me. The campus is beautiful, and there are so many things to do on the weekends. You never need to go off campus. There are also things that Conn has that are completely unique, like the honor code, CELS (Career enhancing life skills), and the five certificate programs. So if you want a small home-like school with amazing opportunities, Conn is for you!

Facilities Are Great

The AC is great, and the student center really is a central part of campus. The library has plenty of space and there are great places to study both in groups and by yourself.

Cute

The town is up and coming and very cute. There are adorable shops and really great cafe's everywhere, but there isn't a lot to do. Although Mystic Seaport, about 10 minutes away, has great resturants, shops, and overall charm. There is really everything you need in Mystic and New London; movie theatres, bowling, an aquarium, and shops.

It's College

It's no secret that a lot of kids at Conn drink. However the vast majority of them drink fairly safely and drugs, while definitely present, are not a problem. No one really seems to use anything harder than marijuana.

Variable and Sunny

Conn is located in New England which mean weather is pretty diverse.

Seeing the campus under snow is magical and snow day doesn't mean that classes will be cancelled.

Classes are very close to the dorms because it is a small campus.

Great Professors, Challenging but Amazing Classes

So far all the classes I've had at Conn are great. The professors are incredibly smart and friendly. I'm a French and German double majors and I have to say, if you want to go deep into foreign languages or global focus, Conn is a great great school for you.

Conn Only Has on-Campus Housing

Hope you like your classmates, because you'll be living with them for four years.

Having only on-campus is very convenient, but it is a reminder that you are on a small campus and will inevitably see the same people everyday. There are some choices for housing that separate you from the main campus. These options include River Ridge Apartments, Abbey House, and Winchester House. These are great places to live for upperclassmen and allow you some separation from the main campus.

Some Great Dining Options and Student Discounts

In Downtown New London there are some great dining options various kinds of food to check out that often give great student discounts. Bank Street and State Street have some good places like Muddy Waters Cafe and Northern Indian Restaurant. Also, for great and inexpensive seafood located on the water, check out Captain Scott's Lobster Dock in New London. And for great tapas, check out Cafe 57 Restaurant and Bar. All of these places have great service as well.

Parking at Connecticut College

Plenty of It, but Not Always Convenient.

There are plenty of places to park a car if you have one on campus. The fees aren't outrageous and because everyone lives on campus, students don't have a crucial need for cars. The areas you can park you car in are not always the most convenient places. For instance, most freshman are assigned to the parking lot by the Athletic Center which is about a ten minute walk from certain parts of campus. And if you fail to park in your assigned lot, you can look forward to a ticket.

I would say that the food here is a lot better than other colleges. There are around six dining halls on campus, each of which servers different food. Conn has every kind of cereal, which is good when you're not in the mood for anything else! If you don't like the food at the dining halls, you can always eat at the "Cro" (the student center).

New London is pretty small, but it has a lot to offer if you take the time to look. Connecticut College has a "Camel Van" that runs every week for those that don't have a car. The van takes students downtown, the mall, and some place students request to go. Conn is right across from the Coast Guard Academy, 45 minuets from Providence, and about an hour from Wesleyan. You'll be sure to find something to do.

We live on a extremely safe campus at Connecticut College. We have campus police who are there to patrol the campus and to keep the peace and intervene if things get out of hand, which rarely happens. Students abide by the Honor Code and are thus very respectful of peers and their environment. Aside from the occasional thefts and alcohol-involved incidents, I feel very safe and comfortable here.

Conn is very internationally...

Conn is very internationally diverse, less racially diverse, very wealthy, and not too socio-economically diverse. But despite the fact that it sometimes seems like there are a lot of rich, white kids here, the politics are mainly liberal. There are a lot of dedicated activists fighting to make sure that the campus is sexual-orientation and gender inclusive. Although the whole campus might not always be the most ideal of places for the queer or questioning community, the activist community is very vocal and vibrant.

Sports are big on campus. Soccer, lacrosse, hockey, and other team sports dominate social life in a way that a Greek system might otherwise. However, club sports, intramurals, and sports like ultimate Frisbee provide a great alternative for those who want to be involved in a non-varsity sport.
