Alright

Dining is average in Harris, but if you go to the smaller dining halls, the food is typically better.

It's College

It's no secret that a lot of kids at Conn drink. However the vast majority of them drink fairly safely and drugs, while definitely present, are not a problem. No one really seems to use anything harder than marijuana.

Variable and Sunny

Conn is located in New England which mean weather is pretty diverse.

Seeing the campus under snow is magical and snow day doesn't mean that classes will be cancelled.

Classes are very close to the dorms because it is a small campus.

Great Professors, Challenging but Amazing Classes

So far all the classes I've had at Conn are great. The professors are incredibly smart and friendly. I'm a French and German double majors and I have to say, if you want to go deep into foreign languages or global focus, Conn is a great great school for you.

Conn Only Has on-Campus Housing

Hope you like your classmates, because you'll be living with them for four years.

Having only on-campus is very convenient, but it is a reminder that you are on a small campus and will inevitably see the same people everyday. There are some choices for housing that separate you from the main campus. These options include River Ridge Apartments, Abbey House, and Winchester House. These are great places to live for upperclassmen and allow you some separation from the main campus.

Some Great Dining Options and Student Discounts

In Downtown New London there are some great dining options various kinds of food to check out that often give great student discounts. Bank Street and State Street have some good places like Muddy Waters Cafe and Northern Indian Restaurant. Also, for great and inexpensive seafood located on the water, check out Captain Scott's Lobster Dock in New London. And for great tapas, check out Cafe 57 Restaurant and Bar. All of these places have great service as well.

Plenty of It, but Not Always Convenient.

There are plenty of places to park a car if you have one on campus. The fees aren't outrageous and because everyone lives on campus, students don't have a crucial need for cars. The areas you can park you car in are not always the most convenient places. For instance, most freshman are assigned to the parking lot by the Athletic Center which is about a ten minute walk from certain parts of campus. And if you fail to park in your assigned lot, you can look forward to a ticket.

I would say that the food here is a lot better than other colleges. There are around six dining halls on campus, each of which servers different food. Conn has every kind of cereal, which is good when you're not in the mood for anything else! If you don't like the food at the dining halls, you can always eat at the "Cro" (the student center).

New London is pretty small, but it has a lot to offer if you take the time to look. Connecticut College has a "Camel Van" that runs every week for those that don't have a car. The van takes students downtown, the mall, and some place students request to go. Conn is right across from the Coast Guard Academy, 45 minuets from Providence, and about an hour from Wesleyan. You'll be sure to find something to do.

We live on a extremely safe campus at Connecticut College. We have campus police who are there to patrol the campus and to keep the peace and intervene if things get out of hand, which rarely happens. Students abide by the Honor Code and are thus very respectful of peers and their environment. Aside from the occasional thefts and alcohol-involved incidents, I feel very safe and comfortable here.

Conn is very internationally...

Conn is very internationally diverse, less racially diverse, very wealthy, and not too socio-economically diverse. But despite the fact that it sometimes seems like there are a lot of rich, white kids here, the politics are mainly liberal. There are a lot of dedicated activists fighting to make sure that the campus is sexual-orientation and gender inclusive. Although the whole campus might not always be the most ideal of places for the queer or questioning community, the activist community is very vocal and vibrant.

Sports are big on campus. Soccer, lacrosse, hockey, and other team sports dominate social life in a way that a Greek system might otherwise. However, club sports, intramurals, and sports like ultimate Frisbee provide a great alternative for those who want to be involved in a non-varsity sport.

There are plenty of computers in the library. The only time when it gets slightly crowded is around midterms and finals, predictably. Aside from the computers upstairs in the library, there is an entire PC lab in the downstairs when it's not being used as a classroom. WiFi works basically everywhere, and they are working on making coverage complete.

Campus Strictness at Connecticut College

The campus seems fairly strict...

The campus seems fairly strict about the drinking, and especially the drug policies, but that has little effect on the drinking culture of the school. Those who want to party will find a way to party, and they do. However, the quiet dorms and substance-free dorms provide plenty of opportunities for those who do not want to participate - or for those who want to participate but be able to come back in the evenings to a quiet dorm!

New London isn't a very large or collegiate town, but it has some to offer for the student willing to try it out. There are several restaurants other than the obvious pizza and takeout chinese food, some which are quite good. There are a few coffee shops and local art galleries, and probably much more if you know where to look.

The 'Plex' dorms seem too hospital-like and boring, but the rooms inside seem fairly nice. The older dorms are generally nicer than the newer ones, and the specialty housing is a good option. The international dorm is one of the best dorms on campus with huge rooms, hardwood floors, and a small close-knit community.

New London offers a lot more in the spring and fall than in the winter because it's right on the water, so it's nicer to enjoy the outdoors. There are some seedy parts, but students don't usually go there. Mitchell College and the Coast Guard are right nearby, but we don't usually interact with Mitchell, and only the Coast Guard when they come to our parties.

Parking is pretty good, but the roads are terrible. Freshmen can bring a car, but they have to park down at the athletic center, which is pretty far away. Sophomores and juniors can park in big parking lots on campus, which is fine, and seniors have special parking outside of their dorms. Lots of kids here have cars.

The athletic center leaves a lot to be desired, but we're in the process of building a new one for the fall, so it will be nice. The dorms vary - some of them are newly renovated, and some are older and less nice, and some are in between. The student center is pretty good. There are a lot of functions there and it has a place to eat.

Most people here are white and middle-to-upper class, so there's not a lot of ethnic or economic diversity. However, Conn is great about financial aid so there is probably a lot more economic diversity than is apparent. It's also incredibly liberal (not a lot of Republicans).

The parties on campus are okay. I don't really like going off campus anyway, but there aren't a lot of places to go, and you definitely can't walk there. The new CT state law makes it really hard for the school to allow us to party, but we do a lot anyways, and sometimes it gets to be a pain dealing with Campus Safety. Downtown bars are a little sketchy and we've only been once or twice. I don't even really know the names because we never go.

The places are okay. There's not a lot of choices, because the dining halls usually only serve the same things as each other, but there is one large dining hall and a few smaller ones. There's also a student snack shop, and we have money on our cards to buy food there. Almost everyone has a full meal plan, unless they live in an apartment (not a lot of people do) or have dietary restrictions.
