Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Cornell athletics and student apathy are often discussed hand in hand. The stands at most sporting events are usually filled only with other student athletes and a handful of parents or community members. That being said, Cornell is competitive in many sports, including basketball and wrestling. A member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a league of the NCAA Division III, Cornell maintains the oldest athletic rivalry west of the Mississippi with Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Cornell provides opportunities for athletes of a wide variety of skill levels and abilities to participate in the sports they love. While many Cornell athletes excelled in their high school programs, they chose Cornell for academics and continue to participate in sports simply for the love of the game. OCAAT has its benefits in the sports arena, as well—with all classes done by 3 p.m. each day, practice and class rarely conflict.

Cornell Athletics

Athletics are not a big part of Cornell, mostly because most of the people who come here come here for the academics, not the sports. We are a small liberal arts college, and while we do have sports teams and several people interested in sports, we aren't very competetive or sports-oriented. However we do offer several club sports and a different sport that anyone can participate in every 3.5 weeks, which is a nice perk for people who like to stay active but who aren't very competitive or committed.

We Alright

The volleyball team and wrestling team are highly competitive teams with the former placing 2nd in the conference and the latter being nationally ranked. We also have a few all american runners and track athletes. Football sucks. No questions asked. We do come out and support though. IM sports are pretty competitive though and has a lot of participants.

School Spirit

There is a general feel of apathy when it comes to athletics at Cornell. Attendance at most sporting events is sparse, and the crowd is usually comprised of other athletes. The only game that students really get excited about is the annual basketball game against rival Coe College—mostly because they get to throw toilet paper on the court when the Rams score their first basket.

Getting Tickets

No tickets necessary! All sporting events are free for students—just present your student ID.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Mount Vernon is a very walking-friendly community, with sidewalks on most streets. Popular walk destinations for students include the train bridge or the shops and coffeehouse uptown.
