Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Housing isn't five-star, but it's certainly functional. With a primarily residential campus, most students live in campus housing all four years they attend Cornell. While a majority of the dorms are communal-style living, with each floor sharing one or two bathrooms, the two newest residence halls feature suite-style rooms—and air conditioning. Freshmen definitely get the short end of the stick, housed in buildings rumored to be designed by a man who also designed prisons. But the options definitely improve with seniority. The room selection process is a unique lottery system. Students draw numbers based on their class year and then those numbers decide the order for room selection, also by class year. The suite-style dorms use a separate lottery system in which points are awarded based on the class year of each person wanting to live in a suite.

The requirement to live on campus fosters a strong sense of community both in the residence halls and on the campus in general. Each dorm has a Hall Council, which plans social events for the building, including finals food study breaks at the end of each block. Cornell’s Residence Life office has several active programs, including the First-Year Success Series. The community feel is fostered by the number of students who stick around over weekends. Even over the four-day block breaks, the dorms are rarely empty.

Eh, It's Alright.

Campus housing at Cornell is guaranteed for all students. The housing varies drastically in quality, ranging from ridiculously hot, dreary, and run-down to air-conditioned, spacious, and vibrant. Basically, if you're a freshman or sophomore, you're stuck in less-than-ideal conditions, and if you're a junior or a senior, you'll be great. The best dorms are, hands down, Merner and Clock Tower. These are mostly upper-class dorms with large rooms, bright, clean atmospheres, and proper heating and cooling. The social atmosphere iwithin dorms varies according to floor, hall, and area of campus. There are also many off-campus living opportunities, but they're usually only available to seniors.

Sub-Par for Underclassmen, Excellent for Upperclassmen

The dorm options are not excellent for freshmen or sophomores. Pauley-Rorem, Dows, Tarr, and Olin are in desperate need of renovation in bathrooms, plumbing, air conditioning, and heating. Dorms like Merner, Clock-Tower, and New Hall are great dorms for upperclassmen that have recently been renovated. Clock & New are both suite-style living while Merner is the traditional community dorm.

Disgusting on Weekends

The dorms are kept pretty clean on the weekdays, although they are by no means spotless, but during the weekends, when people are getting drunk and making big messes, there is not cleaning staff. It's gross.
