Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life is active and visible at Cornell, with about 20 percent of the student body involved in one of the 15 local sororities and fraternities. Diversity is the name of the game when it comes to Cornell Greek groups, with some groups known for their strict alcohol policies and commitment to service and others for the great parties they throw on the weekends. The non-national aspect of the groups adds a deeper sense of community to Greek life in general and makes dues affordable for everyone.

There are no Greek houses, so students who are affiliated usually live in the dorms with the non-affiliated students. A few groups do have unofficial off-campus houses or apartments which serve primarily as hang out spots and party locales. The attitude of the rest of campus really varies by individual, ranging from disgust to enjoyment of the activities Greeks provide. Cliques, inter-group rivalries, and exclusivity are the most commonly cited problems within Cornell’s Greek system.

Wow, Fun Stuff, but Not for Everyone

I didn't even consider participating in Greek Life until I got to Cornell. The sororities and fraternities here are not national chapters, they're local ones, so they're somewhat different from typical ones. There is a wide variety within Greek Life, ranging from feminists to hard partiers, to service-oriented groups. Generally, everyone is very accepting and fun-loving. Many events are hosted by the Greek Life community and it's very easy to be involved.

Not a Real Greek Life

There are no Greek houses; the members live in the resident halls with everyone else. The Greek students are seen as somewhat annoying to the rest of the student body. Parties aren't big.

Greek Life at Cornell

Greek life at Cornell College is pretty big. I would say that 1/3 of the campus is part of a frat or sorority and everyone knows at least one person who is part of Greek life. There is a lot of drinking but it's always under control. Being in apart of Greek life is a great experience.
