Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Safety isn’t something most students question at Cornell. Located in a town of about 3,000, the small-town sense of security spills over onto campus. Many students leave their dorm rooms unlocked—despite encouragement from Residence Life and Campus Safety to do otherwise. There are occasional thefts and several cars get broken into each year, but students walking across campus in the dead of night still feel perfectly safe. The general consensus among students is that it’s a good thing Mount Vernon is such a safe community because they wouldn’t trust the Campus Safety officers if they were ever in any real danger.

Cornell’s Student Health Services is staffed by two registered nurses who can provide basic medical care. They also have a great working relationship with the two clinics in town and can usually get a student an appointment for the same day if she/he needs care beyond what the nurses can provide. Cornell also serves as a satellite clinic for St. Luke’s Family Planning, which provides women’s health services and birth control on bi-monthly visits to campus. The Health Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with extended hours until 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Appointments are on a walk-in, first-come, first-served basis.

Some things are covered up by the school

I know that whenever someone is even accused of sexual assult, the school automatically kicks them out. Which is good, I guess, but it also fosters the illusion that the campus is completely sexual-assult free and just sweeps the problem under the rug. There is an air of ignorance regarding sexual assult here, as with probably the rest of American universities. However, originally coming from a big city, Cornell is generally a very safe campus.

Cornell College Is Very Safe

I have never felt unsafe or vulnerable at Cornell. The campus is small and in a very safe, quiet town. The only people to be wary of are the drunk students on campus and even they aren't much of a threat and are easily handled by Campus Security.
