Best Time to Look for a Place

If you are approved to live off campus, the best time to start looking is the previous spring before you want to move in. A lot of landlords use current tenants to find renters for the following year, so get in good with friends who have apartments in town.

Popular Areas The closer to campus, the better—because parking for students who live off campus is extremely limited, and it's too cold to walk very far in the winter.
Average Rents
  • 1 BR: $325
  • 2 BR: $500
  • 3-4 BR (house): $650

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you’re imagining college life in your own apartment, then Cornell is not the place for you. Students are required to live on campus unless they win a slot in the senior lottery or have special circumstances, including being married or having children.

For those students who do live off campus, the selection of housing available is slim pickings, particularly since the Cedar Rapids flood in 2008. You definitely get what you pay for, and the cheaper places tend to be older, less clean and have landlords who don’t care as much about their tenants. However, compared to rent in a city, prices in small-town Iowa are definitely on the cheaper end of the spectrum. Most places are within walking distance, which is good because parking along the street or in visitors’ lots is limited.

Off-Campus Housing

The Off-Campus Housing at Cornell is very limited, and you're basically on your own if you would like to live off campus. It's highly recommended that everyone try to live on campus, and since Mount Vernon is so small and limited in housing opportunities there isn't much of a point to live off campus in the first place.

Worth It for the Independence

Coming from a big city, the apartment prices in Mount Vernon seem comparatively cheap. It's worth it just to get off the meal plan, which gouges out much of your cash, and the walk to school is almost instantaneous. If you're willing to drive a bit further to school, you can opt to live in nearby Lisbon, where the apartments are cheaper still. Only seniors are allowed to live off campus, but apartments around town are in high demand. Avoid the springtime rush for apartments by starting your search early.
