Over the past few years, the administration has become progressively harsher in regards to campus social activities. More than one fraternity has been closed or fined for underage drinking and other misdemeanors. Part of the incentive for moving freshmen to North Campus was to isolate them from the majority of fraternities and sororities that are located on West Campus. Ithaca police are no kinder, and they will crack down on you for open containers and noise violations.
What it boils down to is using discretion and being smart. Most police officers and resident advisers will look the other way in the face of drunken students returning from parties, but acting overly rowdy and drinking in the dorms themselves will usually result in some sort of penalty. Cornell police are in place to keep things orderly and safe. While this may be an annoyance to students looking to relax, it’s necessary to maintain not only security, but safety as well. This is a major concern for Cornell, and there are services available if a friend is ill from drinking that allow you to get help without risking a huge punishment. Explicit offenses are dealt with accordingly, and consequences are not severe unless you are a repeat offender.
