College Prowler Take

Most students agree that Greek life is very visible on campus. However, for those who don’t wish to participate, it’s fairly easy to ignore, although finding parties may prove difficult. Greek life dominates the social scene for those under 21, after which its influence decreases considerably.

Some students are suspect of the Greek system’s practices and its support of cliques and a patriarchal system. Negative stereotypes about those in the Greek system may or may not be true, but many students support and enjoy Greek life. Fraternities and sororities may insulate themselves, but many host open parties, events, and charity drives that engage the entire Cornell community. In general, members of the Greek system love it, and outside members are either apathetic or dislike it—it really depends on individual preference.

About one-third of students are Greek, but each of the houses has its own niche. I didn’t go Greek, but I have had no problems going to their events or being friends with those who are in the system.

Greek life is probably exactly what you would expect it to be—the stereotypes are mostly true. It does tend to dominate the social scene because fraternities and sororities are basically social clubs—that’s their purpose. So while it does dominate social life, it does not dominate the student population. Basically, Greek life is here if you’re interested in it. If you aren’t, then it’s very easy to disregard it. There is definitely still a social scene that is not associated with Greek life. The bars and clubs are their own thing. There are also a great number of house parties every weekend that friends will throw. Personally, I was not involved with Greek life here. I do not regret my decision, but Greek life definitely has its benefits. It can be a good social outlet if you want that kind of structure. It can also come in handy for connections.

Greek life dominates the social scene. That doesn’t mean you can’t do your own thing. The Greek student body tends to become fragmented by house, and brothers or sisters stick with their own. It’s really up to the individual to recognize his or her own unique interests and most comfortable niche. Many students choose to join the Greek system, the second largest in the country, but you don’t necessarily have to be a member to be social.

Greek life has gone from great to good and is still deteriorating as a result of Cornell’s unnecessary policies, procedures, and regulations. It used to dominate the social scene, but now I think that bars and fraternities are equally dominant.

For about the first two years of college, Greek life dominates the social scene. Of course, when students become of age, they typically explore the local Collegetown bar scene for the next two years.

Did You Know?

The Greek scene varies considerably, ranging from typical, social-oriented chapters to service and pre-professional fraternities.

Joining a fraternity or sorority can open new avenues in your social experience at Cornell. Most chapters have their own parties, formals, and football tailgates. They also join in all-Greek events. Being a part of the Greek organization gives you the opportunity to meet and develop friendships with people from all walks of life.

Some members actively participate in community service activities in and around the greater Ithaca area. During Rush Week, girls visit each sorority on campus to meet with sisters in order to find an ideal match. Guys, on the other hand, visit fraternities of their choice for “smokers” during the daytime.
