College Prowler Take

Students express both praise and criticism of their overall experience at Cornell University. Positive experiences seem to outweigh negative ones, with most agreeing that even some of the negative aspects of Cornell—the immense workload, competition, dreary weather, and social pressures of a large campus—have taught them valuable life lessons. The large size of the campus can be both a blessing and a curse.Cornell offers a wealth of academic, professional, and personal opportunities, but can also offers the feeling of getting lost in the crowd.

Most students agree that it falls on the individual to make the most out of one’s time at Cornell to be outgoing, open to new ideas and experiences, and proactive in pursuit of one’s goals. Classes are difficult, and no one can expect to coast, but for those who are willing to work hard, classes can be very fulfilling. Finding a balance between coursework and social activities can be difficult, but if you can manage it, you will find a campus filled with new and interesting activities to get involved in.

The climate doesn’t ease the burden and stress of an immense load of work. Depending on the college and major, you should expect to work very hard. Moreover, the social scene becomes easily monotonous in a confined place like Ithaca. New York City and Montreal are only about four to five hours away, so trips to either of these places can add variance to the monotony. If your priority is schooling, choose Cornell. If you want partying and sun, go to the University of Miami. Personally, in retrospect, I’m glad I chose the former.

Overall, my experience at Cornell...

Overall, my experience at Cornell has been very rewarding. The academic opportunities are immense, and the resources at your disposal are not to be overlooked. If your aim is to get one of the best educations in the world, this is the place to be. But a top-tier Ivy League education in Ithaca comes at a cost. The long winter months makes Ithaca a very bleak and miserable place to live. While the summers and clear skies are gorgeous (“Ithaca is gorges”), they don’t make up for the miserable weather by a long shot. They do, however, make Cornellians appreciate the summer that much more.

Sometimes I regret coming here, but I have met and befriended some very cool and interesting people. Cornell, despite all it lacks, is a good place to expand your horizons and learn a lot more about life.

I’ve had great years, good years, and bad years. Overall, I’m quite happy with my time here. I was able to get a really good job and meet some amazing people. I don’t think I would have been much happier at any other school, certainly not any of the others I was looking at. The one thing I can say about Cornell is that nothing is handed to you. There are incredible resources out there, but you have to take the initiative to go out and find them. If you expect anything to be spoon-fed to you, you’ll be in for a disappointment.

I don’t think that Cornell is for everyone. I think that it is a great school, but plenty of people might be miserable here. It’s actually quite intense. If you come here, you will work hard—they don’t give away grades here. I’m the type of person, however, who really likes a challenging, intense environment, so Cornell is perfect for me in this respect. It also has a very active social scene, so it’s a balanced school in that regard.
