Question:

Dear College Prowler Counselor,

I was recently admitted to the Teachers College at Columbia University for a MA degree in Social-Organizational Psychology. Do you know if the Teachers College, being an affiliate of Columbia University, is considered to be Ivy League?

Sarah, University of Deleware
New York, NY
Answer:
Hi Sarah,

Just to stay on the safe side, I would have to say it is not an Ivy League school. It is affiliated with one, and once you get there people might tell you otherwise, but for now I would say that you have been accepted and are hopefully planning to attend a school that is affiliated with an Ivy League school.

Hope this helps,

Question:

Dear College Prowler,

I am in the IB program at my high school. I am a rising senior and I am taking 7 and a half classes. I am taking Chemistry as my higher level; however, I'd like to learn physics. I have no room in my schedule. I cannot take physics at the community college over the summer or during the school year. Would a college still recognize my efforts if I got the textbook, lesson plans, etc. from the physics teacher, and taught myself?

Jerome, Princess Anne High
Virginia Beach, VA
Answer:
Hi Jerome,

To answer your question, no, schools will not recognize your efforts if you just get a textbook and lesson plans and try to teach yourself. I have taken Physics, and there are a lot of formulas that are not easy to understand without some form of explaination.

However, if you are interested in learning about Physics, think about starting a Physics club at your school. There don?t have to be many people in it, but get together once or maybe twice a week to discuss what is in the textbook, so that you?ll be able to have some type of understanding of the subject. Then, you all could make it a goal to set up a lab and write a lab report. If you can get your report approved by a teacher, you might be able to mention something to colleges/universities about putting in effort to learn SOME Physics.

Best of luck,

Question:

Dear College Prowler Counselor,

How much and how long will it take me to pursue a master degree in Spanish as a Second Language?
Will I be able to obtain a scholarship?
Can I do my studies both in class and on -line?
Will I receive credits from the current master degree that I now hold?

-Petrona
Bronx, NY
Answer:
Petrona,

Ordinarily, an M.A. in Spanish takes 2 years?the amount of time it takes a full-time student to complete 30 credits. Concerning your current credits, this probably depends upon the college. However, at UMI for example, you must earn 24 of your 30 credits at that university. Plus, depending what M.A. you currently hold, the credits may not apply.

Whether you can take classes in person or on-line most likely depends upon the university you choose to attend. You might want to contact the head of the Spanish department to ask such a question.

Finally, as for scholarship, this again depends upon the school as well as your own individual financial situation.

Question:

Dear College Prowler Counselor,

I have a GED and am trying to attend a music college or performing arts college. I am unsure about my sat scores, and i have no records of my academic past. how should i begin looking for schools. What can I do to obtain my records.

-Angelo, Middletown High School
Middletown, NY
Answer:
Angelo,

To obtain your records, you need to contact the guidance office of your high school. They should have your transcript on file and should be able to provide you with at least an unofficial copy for your personal records. Then, when it comes time to apply, you should take addressed, postmarked envelopes back to your guidance office and ask them to send your transcript to the schools you have specified.
