Question:

Dear College Prowler Counselor,

Is it right to make my application essays emotional so they could know how I really feel?

-Akriti, West-Windsor Plainsboro H.S. North
Plainsboro, NJ

Answer:

Akriti,

That is a very interesting and logical question. A lot of students in your positions aren?t really sure where to begin their college essay. I?m not sure if you want to make it so emotional that the admissions office knows your deepest darkest secrets, your worst fears and your dreams from last night? but you are definitely on the right track. You want them to know how you really feel?

You want your letter to be personal, but not too private. You have to know when and where to draw the line. Since your essay may be in lieu of an interview with the admissions office, you want to give them some information about who you are, some of the statistics that the generic application doesn?t ask for. Tell them about something important that has shaped your life, something you have had to work really hard at to overcome, and achievement that you're reallly proud of?if you don?t already have an assigned topic.

Keep your essay focused and organized. In other words, don?t change subjects abruptly. Stay with the same topic until you have finished your entire idea. They want to know who you are from reading something that you have written, so keep your writing style clean, and don?t use pretentious words, it doesn?t impress admissions counselors. Write about something that means a lot to you, not what you think they will want to hear.

So to answer your question again, I would include some personal feelings, but I wouldn?t overload your essay with emotions, you don?t want to scare them. I?m not quite sure how you ?really feel? but just try to stay within reason. It?s totally up to you how much emotion to put in your college essay; I would advise to keep it below the max.

Good Luck,
