Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Creighton seems to have a good sense of priority involving strictness—obviously, a few drinks with friends in a dorm room isn’t likely to kill anyone. But someone staggering with a bottle of rum yelling at the top of his lungs on the Mall on a Tuesday night won’t last long out there. The latest policy dictates that any student caught intoxicated on campus be sent to detox at Creighton Medical Center. It’s a policy that some students are very concerned about for being overly strict—having a medical bill and a call to the parents just for Friday night merriment doesn’t seem very nice. But, the people who get taken to the clinic usually have been drinking way too much or acting really stupid. Few students say they have seen anyone have to go who didn’t need to. In other areas of discipline, the biggest complaint students seem to have is consistency. Many students say they consider it unfair how quickly they’re ticketed for parking in a faculty spot, considering how long faculty members can park in student lots without receiving a citation.

Like all other things, Creighton wants to teach its students how to live the rest of their lives. If they are able to party quietly like adults, then they’re on the right track, and there’s no need to use University resources to punish them. Overall, it’s a smart system. The University usually makes appropriately strict policies and adequately enforces them. It lets students chug in peace. Creighton’s strictness seems to take into account keeping students safe and letting them have fun—it’s a common-sense system that benefits all.

Public Safety

They are helpful for getting to your vehicle safely at night but they don't really appear to do anything else on campus. Drinking on campus for underclassmen is strict if you get caught, so be smart.

Over the Top

Creighton is all about catching kids that are drinking. It is the primary focus of Creighton's Public Safety. RAs are mainly out to catch people drinking in the dorms, despite the amount of drinking going on. A student can get in trouble for having one beer. The policy on check in times for the dorms is also ridiculous. Any time after 7 pm, students that do not live in certain residence halls have to be checked in by a student that lives in the dorm they are trying to go into. The administration is also incredibly unfair in the way it deals with Greek Life. The policy at Creighton is guilty until proven innocent, and certain fraternities and sororities are singled out, despite the nature of their offenses.

Very Strict on Drinking and Drugs

The police force can be pretty strict about underage drinking and drug use. First-time offenders get a letter sent home, and second- and third-time offenders are in danger of losing their housing. It’s pretty serious if you get caught, so my best advice is to do everything discreetly and not to be obnoxious about it. If you’re going to drink then drink responsibly, but don’t start advertising keg parties in your room. You will get busted!
