Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At a school where many classes are conducted via Blueline, an online classroom system, and teachers are just as likely to ask you to e-mail papers as printing them out, you’d be worse off without a computer than a yellow No. 2 pencil. Technology department surveys have found that approximately 97 percent of Creighton students have their own computers. While there are a few departments where professors all but condemn technology or have just moved into the age of the overhead projector, most professors are as awed as the students are by the ability to easily do research—Creighton’s library subscribes to online editions of almost any publication you want—and connect with others—most professors are notoriously quick e-mail responders, so don't think you won’t get an alternate assignment right after sending in an excuse to miss class.

You can find a computer if you need one. Most departments have their own labs or shared access to labs, and the library lets you check out laptops if you don’t want to use the desktops there. Printing is available for a fee on campus for those who don't have a printer at their immediate disposal. But, considering how convenient it is to use your own computer, not to mention how often you’ll need one, it’s probably one of the wisest investments a new student can make. A printer is more tolerable to live without, but it comes in handy to have when you’re on a tight deadline.

Not Too Shabby!

There are plenty of computers available in the labs and library located all over campus. Most people carry laptops though. Printing gets expensive sometimes, at seven to ten cents a page. So it's much cheaper to have your own. Campus WIFI is reliable for the most part though and is everywhere on campus.

Did You Know?

Creighton has been ranked by Intel as one of the top 50 “Most Unwired College Campuses”—in 2004 for the excellent wireless Internet computing capabilities students have on campus. It did not make the grade in 2005 or 2006, yet they started to only use schools with over 10,000 students.

If you don’t have wireless, there are Ethernet ports in each of the classroom.

Macs are becoming a more popular computer of choice for many students. Some departments, like Journalism, require students to be able to operate a Mac.
