Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

As hard as the University tries to attract minorities, it’s tough to keep real diversity on a campus that is located in nondiverse Nebraska, is affiliated with Catholicism (though it’s not required of students to practice any religion), and is small and fairly expensive. It appears that despite strong efforts to recruit a population with well-mixed backgrounds, Creighton students share a common white heritage and a similar upper-middle-class social standing. However, there are some student organizations that promote their culture and try to educate the student body majority about their heritage. The Latino Students Association and Indian Cultural Society, among others, organize annual events with wide appeal. The African Students Association holds a yearly soul food celebration that teaches about their history via a gastronomical education.

It’s clear by looking down the Mall that most students are white, but Creighton's minority population percentage is greater than the state of Nebraska’s. As one student said, it may not be obvious in the general population, but attend events and join organizations, and you’ll find minorities taking on active roles in student life. Whether there is a lot of diversity or not, problems between minorities and non-minorities aren’t seen as an issue. The most recent campus security reports show no hate crimes, and students of varied races and sexual orientations generally report feeling as safe as anyone else on campus. Groups like GSA usually have strong support from the general student population and even, perhaps surprisingly, from the Jesuit leaders on campus.

Little Diversity

Unless you are while or hawaiian, you will likely feel like you are outnumbered. Since Creighton is a private school, a large majority of the students are white and from the upper middle class or upper class. There is a large hawaiian population on campus but they mostly stick together and do not socialize with anyone unless you are asian or hawaiian. Despite the lack of diversity, there seems to be acceptance towards all races and little segregation.

Diversity

There is a great multicultural center on campus for support and information for all races. There is also a very active, involved and respected GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) club on campus so sexual and racial diversity is very well accepted. Being in the midwest there is definitely a skewed ratio of races leaning towards Caucasians but that doesn't cause many problems.

How diverse is the student body in the following areas?

How diverse is your personal circle of friends in the following areas?

How accepting is the campus community as a whole toward someone who falls into the minority (ethnic, sexual, or religious)?

How would you best describe your personal political beliefs?

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

With the Gay-Straight Alliance playing an active role in student life, there is a gay presence. However, it seems as if there just aren’t enough people to make the gay community really obvious, or maybe the religious background of the school makes it difficult.

Political Activity

At the core of the Jesuit tradition is the pursuit of truth and justice, and the willingness to help others. While protests aren't daily events on campus, a group of students attends a protest in Georgia each year at the former School of the Americas, and justice-oriented speakers frequent campus. There is plenty of anti-war liberalism, but there is a strong oppositional conservative force, too—this is a very Republican part of the Midwest, after all.

Economic Status

Creighton has its share of students with very comfortable backgrounds, but it also has several students on full scholarships and loans. To some extent, college life seems to do a good job of equalizing students’ budgets, as even those with wealthy parents are often sent a limited amount of money.

Most Common Religions

About 60 percent of the student body practices Roman Catholicism. The school is run by Jesuits. There are also a significant number of Protestants and small contingents of other religions.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Creighton has quite a few minority clubs, like CU Latino Students Association and CU African Student Association, as well as a Latina sorority and an active Indian Cultural Society.
