Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The overwhelming advice given by Creighton students regarding security is don’t be stupid. The problem seems to stem from the fact that Creighton quickly feels like a small town, and you think you know everyone and start to think that there’s no way anything bad could ever happen. Then, your computer’s stolen, your room is broken into, or you’re carjacked. While Creighton students don’t seem to be a crime-prone group, Omaha is the biggest city in Nebraska, and there is crime here. However, it’s no worse than in other cities this size—it just feels that way because Creighton is in Omaha’s high-crime area. Most of the city’s shelters are just off campus, and it’s not uncommon to bump into homeless folks if you go for a jog, but they are usually no problem. It’s the muggers you have to worry about, and many students have seen or at least heard about auto thefts and other incidents.

Crime may seem rampant at those times, but Omaha actually is among the lower-crime cities its size. However, while Public Safety does its best, students are not immune to urban dangers, especially if they live off campus. Since such crimes typically aren’t reported to the University, frequency rates can only be speculated, yet one student reported her off-campus house being broken into three times last year before she finally got out of her lease and moved. Another student was recently held up at gunpoint.

Safety at CU

Campus safety is average, I would say. Within the heart of campus I feel very safe, but due to Creighton's location I wouldn't want to be walking on the outskirts or off campus alone at night. There should probably be more shuttles going back and forth all through the night, which would make transport to campus much more secure and accessible. Next year I am living in a dorm that's kind of off campus, and I'm skeptical about commuting home at night.

I have never felt unsafe on Creighton's campus. The university does a great job implementing safety procedures throughout campus. Although campus is in a rough part of town, Creighton never feels unsafe.

Creighton Is a Safe Campus in a Downtown Metro Area

Being from the Omaha area, I know that Creighton is very close to the less-safe areas of town. That being said, I have never felt anything less than safe on-campus. There are safety lights and phones all over campus, the security staff is easily found, every student is told to put Campus Safety's number into their phones on the first day on-campus, and the residence life staff is there if you need it.
