Quick Stats

School Slang
  • A&S: College of Arts & Sciences, Already Screwed
  • Admin: The Administration Building, located on the east side of campus opposite Swanson Hall. The Business Office is on the first floor; the second floor houses the Arts & Sciences Dean’s Office and the Registrar’s office. The upper levels are for classrooms.
  • BA: Business Administration Building. It is attached to Rigge Science Building and is where most COBA and several A&S classes are held.
  • The Bean: Located outside the Student Center’s west entrance, it’s a wooden platform shaped like a kidney bean that’s good for sunning or relaxing.
  • COBA: College of Business Administration, Currently Out Buying Alcohol, Currently Out Buying A--, Cute Obviously But Arrogant, College of Budweiser Administration
  • CSU: Creighton Students Union, the student government
  • The DR: The Dominican Republic, where Creighton has a small campus some students go for a semester or summer to learn and volunteer.
  • The Facebook: Thefacebook.com is a time-wasting tool of Creighton students.
  • Fallapalooza: An annual concert sponsored by CSU Program Board
  • HC and CA: Two easily confused buildings, the Humanities Center and Hitchcock Communication Arts Building are identical brick buildings with the same two first initials. CA is often written HK, also.
  • The Jay: A crappy but charming virtually on-campus bar that serves specials after games and on Wednesdays (sorority/fraternity chapter nights).
  • Jesuit Gardens: Behind the Admin Building, it’s a lush garden area with picnic tables and lots of shade. Home of an 11-toed statue
  • KFC: Kiewit Fitness Center, which is attached to the student center. Run off that crispy chicken at the KFC.
  • Lower St. John’s: Basement of the big church in the middle of campus. Entrance is on the west side of the building.
  • The Mall: California Street, a brick pathway, once ran through campus. Train tracks still existed there until recently, when the bricks were replaced for safety reasons, and instead, steps were installed that only approximately 80 percent of the student population has since sprained an ankle on.
  • Old Gym: On the northeast end of campus, the old gym has telephone and computer services on the first floor, the math department on the second, and a computer lab on the third.
  • Pop: What Nebraskans call their carbonated beverages. Many clashes occur over whether it’s soda, pop, or worse, the Southern preference, Coke (especially troubling on a Pepsi campus).
  • Retreat: Sort of a getaway. The 24-hour retreat for freshmen is not required, but highly-encouraged as a chance to get to know people better. There may be prayer/reflection times, but having a certain religious belief is not a requirement.
  • The Screw: A flame-shaped fountain in front of St. John’s Church
  • SJ: The Society of Jesus, follows the names of Jesuits
  • Squirrels: Apparently steroid-injected fuzzy creatures running rampant on campus
  • SSC: The Skutt Student Center

Greek Life!

Best decision that I made since coming to Creighton was to go greek. It opens so many more opportunities to students, and is unique to Creighton.

Inside Creighton

Creighton's campus is pretty old, the buildings and St. John's Church have been around for a while! But this gives it character and has shown that Creighton is an old but very respectable place. Getting around campus is pretty easy too.

Creighton also has many extra curricular activities for every student and they also have many off campus jobs, volunteer work or internships they help connect students to.

Internships

Being an undergraduate college student at the college of business, I've noticed that there's a significant emphasis placed on internships. Finding a job quickly after graduation is an important focus of my university. It makes me feel confident that I'll be working at a steady job after school.

Facts

Traditions
  • Candlelight Mass: A tradition popular among Catholic students, but also attended by others, is the Sunday night Candlelight Mass. The service is shorter, to fit into students’ schedules better, and it is held by candlelight. Come early—St. John’s Church gets packed fast!
  • Christmas at Creighton: Each year’s Christmas kicks off the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving with a ceremony. Then a Christmas tree is lit with Creighton-blue lights, as well as lights all over the Mall.
  • Getting Blue: A few years ago, all Creighton students began receiving identical blue T-shirts. The purpose was to build school spirit and encourage attendance at sporting events. Today, students clad in the shirts form a “blue out” wall at games. “Getting Blue” events—with barbecues, bands, and beer—are held before some games.
  • JayWalk: A recent tradition, the JayWalk is benefit for the Jesuit Middle School of Omaha, which is a school that especially seeks to provide a Jesuit education to young urban males. Students, faculty, and others pay an entry fee that goes to support the school’s operations.
  • Lil’ Jays Weekend: Part family time, part early recruitment effort, Lil’ Jays Weekend targets the younger brothers and sisters of Creighton students—whether they are three or seventeen years old. Activities include everything from visiting the zoo to coloring pictures to having autographs signed by Creighton athletes. It’s a great way to have fun with a little sibling and share your school spirit. Steer clear if you have a strong aversion to loud little ones or corny activities.
  • Lip Sync: Each year, Greek organizations sponsor a Welcome Week Lip Sync, which fraternities, sororities, and freshman seminar groups compete in for their claim to fame—and embarrassment. Stories about Lip Sync goofiness often follow students well into their junior years and beyond.
  • Retreats: Creighton has its own retreat center in a rustic setting near Griswold, Iowa. Expect to visit at least once if you are heavily involved in student activities, or go deliberately for one of Campus Ministry’s many retreats. The 24 Hours Retreat is a way for freshmen to get away from campus in those long and lonely first months away from home for friend-making and good food. Adventure retreats take students to exotic river locations for activities like canoeing and hiking. All of it combines prayer and reflection, but the important part for many is forging bonds with classmates.
  • School of the Americas: Creighton students organize protests at the former School of the Americas, now called WHINSEC, in Fort Benning, Georgia each year. The school is said to be responsible for producing some of the worst human rights violators in Latin America, including Manuel Noriega and Hugo Suarez.
  • Spring Break Service Trips: Based on the five pillars of the Spring Break Service Trips (service, justice, community, simplicity, and reflection), these trips are held through the Center for Service and Justice and involve small student groups visiting service sites around the country. Past trips included visits to Native American reservations and inner-city housing projects.
Urban Legends
  • After a rash of post-midterm suicides, Creighton instituted Fall Break.
  • The Admin Building is haunted.
  • The Jesuits travel to buildings via secret underground tunnels.
