Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Omaha is all but dead to the under-21 set. There are no Greek houses on campus, so any approved on-campus party is pretty low-key. Dorm room soirees are fun for freshmen and sophomores, and most RAs don’t intrude unless they have a reason to be suspicious, such as loud noise or a tattle-tell roommate. Off-campus parties can be a lot of fun. There’s usually one somewhere at least every weekend. One fraternity has a well-known party weekly for their “Thirsty Thursday” gathering with plenty of drunken craziness. There is a just-off-campus bar, The Bluejay Bar and Grill, which hosts much of the entertainment, including cheap bottles on Wednesdays and game-night specials. Many Creighton students, like the University’s founders, have Irish-Catholic backgrounds, which means St. Paddy’s day is one of the most entertaining days of fun, kicked off with free Lucky Charms cereal at the Jay in the morning and finished with green beer at night.

Downtown is within walking distance, with bars including the hot spot Dubliner (again, that Irish-Catholic thing), Upstream, and the virtually hidden GoofyFoot Lounge, which has great pool tables. About a 10-minute drive across the Missouri River, you have access to Iowa’s bars, which close an hour later than Nebraska’s, and casinos, where you can get your poker game on around the clock. A few people do the club thing, but the bars seem to be mostly where the fun is. The Maxx is a gay bar that also draws plenty of young heterosexuals to its afterhours dancing. And, you can always look forward to getting to drink on campus after your 21st birthday—Creighton is a wet campus, and beer gardens are held at games, and receptions with deans and the president occasionally involve a booze cart.

You Need a Fake

The only way you'll enjoy yourself on weekends is if you get a fake and go to the Jay, which after a while isn't that exciting. The drinks are pretty cheap though. The fraternities throw parties first semester to make you think they go hard and then they do nothing but date parties and formals second semester. If you're not in a frat, you're screwed.

So Many Choices

Creighton is lucky to be in the middle of Omaha. At night you have the option of going to places such as Mid Town or Old Market. If you are in for a change of scenery you can find small places with open mic night any day of the week and it is always a great time. For the most part though there are house parties and events put on by the fraternities/sororities.

Facts

Club Crawler

Clubs aren’t that big at Creighton. Most merrymakers prefer bars and house parties.

Bar Prowler

Most Creighton students seem to like, at the very least, an occasional drink. Bars are a great place to share that pleasure, and Omaha seems a lot livelier at age 21 than at 20.9.

Organization Parties

Sometimes, an organization will throw a party at someone’s house or apartment, but since most students have acquaintances outside one’s immediate group, they’re often open to anyone. It’s a good time to meet a quirky, close-knit student group if you don’t belong to the organization, or to hang with your pals if you do.

Club ListingsWhat's This?

Club Roxbury

Like the others, Roxbury has a typical club atmosphere playing top-40 dance music, but it’s way out west.

10841 Q St.

(402) 339-9791

Club Patrick’s

Open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 1 a.m., Club Patrick’s has some decent specials and is a lot of fun. There’s a strictly-enforced but fairly-casual dress code (basically, no baggy or athletic clothes), and the place has cool lights and fun holiday events during Halloween and New Year’s.

Club Amnesia

This is a club with the typical party atmosphere, playing rock and roll and some hip-hop. They plaster cars and dorm rooms with advertising, but otherwise, this club doesn’t particularly stand out.

Mr. Toad’s

Cozy Mr. Toad’s has all the ambience—a “reading room” interior, with pews for seating, on the inside, there’s a patio outside where you can sit and watch other Old Market revelers.

1002 Howard St.

(402) 345-4488

Pauli’s

Pauli’s calls itself home of the College World Series and offers drink specials along with it. The place draws big crowds and often bands; it’s especially popular among those who just graduated and have their first jobs.

(402) 345-7959

The Homy Inn

The Homy is a bit farther from campus than the Old Market, but it’s in an area of town where many students live. It has the quaint atmosphere of a tiny town tavern with yummy specialties like champagne on tap. Order some peanuts—they come served in a doggy dish.

1510 N. Saddle Creek Rd.

(402) 554-5815

The Bluejay Bar and Grill (the Jay)

A Creighton tradition, institution, and preferred location to get bombed, the Jay is much-loved for having the type of “rustic” décor and cheap drinks only a college student could truly appreciate. The tables are sparse, but no one notices on nights like Wednesday, when there are $1.50 bottles, and after games, when there are 45 minutes of free drinks. At peak times, the interior is indiscernible because of the wall-to-wall horde of alcohol-hungry students.

2416 Davenport St.

(402) 449-9128

The Dubliner Pub

The Dub is a fun little spot with, of course, Irish bands and a terrific atmosphere. A popular Creighton student hangout, the Dub offers tasty Guinness and other specials that appeal to the Irish-Catholic-dominant CU crowd.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

The Omaha Mining Company

This afterhours club offers a place to dance for those 18-and-older from 1:30 a.m. to 4 a.m. every Friday and Saturday. This is a great place to come out after party- or bar-hopping, and it’s usually packed with Creighton late-nighters.

Players Nightclub

Play on at Players. Here, DJs spin Wednesday to Saturday nights.

8552 Park Dr.

(402) 339-8660

The Max

The Max is a gay bar, and it is a good time for all when it opens to those over 18. It is also an afterhours club.

1417 Jackson St.

(402) 346-4110

Mixxers

Here, a DJ dance plays music Thursday to Saturday with no cover.
