Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Off-campus housing is the only way to live as a Baruch College student. Baruchians, all of whom commute to classes, either live with their parents, alone, or with a roommate. Manhattan has a vast rental market, but some students may tell you that it's much cheaper to live in the other boroughs, the most popular being Queens and Brooklyn. Finding the perfect roommate(s)—a much cheaper alternative to renting alone—can be challenging, but Web sites like newyork.craigslist.org, roommateclick.com, and roommatelocator.com offer free listings. You can also work with a broker, but they often charge fees. For gender-exclusive arrangements, check out Saint Mary's Residence at 225 E. 72nd St., Centro Maria at 539 W. 54th St., or Markle Residence at 123 W. 13th St., all of which are women only. Kolping House at 165 E. 88th St. is a residence for guys.

Obviously, apartments in Manhattan are pricey, but you can sometimes uncover a few gems, like a one-bedroom apartment for less than $1,500 in areas like Washington Heights and Inwood. But, when the express train stops running at night, your commute time back to your apartment can jump to as much as an hour. So, if you don't mind spending some time on a train, bus, or ferry, you might as well just save money and rent in one of the other four boroughs anyway.

On-Campus Is LIMITED

First of Baruch does not have a campus per se, so on campus housing is a relatively new thing and very limited. Most students find housing elsewhere since the cost of the dorms is greatly inflated due to the demand. Since, it's primarily identified as a commuter school it should be relatively easy to see that most students commute from around the City.

Housing Available, but I Don't Dorm at Baruch

There is a building next to vertical campus that is used for housing. The building seems to be on the older side. I believe the prices are typical Manhattan prices.

New York Is an Expensive City

New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the world. That is why most students still live with their parents when they attend Baruch.
