Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

New York City is known for its many cultures, and CCNY is no different. The environment is very heterogeneous with a variety of student ethnicities, age groups, economic statuses, and political beliefs. Students come from all across the world.

Economically, most are middle to lower class Americans seeking the opportunity to pursue their education at an affordable price. The socio-economic similarities put students on common ground, but the diverse backgrounds allow for intercultural exploration. Ideologies are constantly clashing—capitalsits mingling with communists and atheists talking with conservative Christians, for example—but the ultimate outcome is tolerance. Sexuality and differing beliefs become less of a problem due to the atmosphere at CCNY.

Diverse and Cultural

Being a school from New York, City College is a pretty diverse institution. Hispanics and Asians comprise about half of the student population. However each ethnicity is fully represented and there is a strong cultural presence among the students.

So Diverse That Race Does Not Define Us

Anyone walking through city college can be guaranteed that they will run into people of all kinds of races and lifestyles. This is a positive aspect of ccny because it enables our class discussions to be more interesting in terms of what each person will contribute with respect to their own personal stories.

Gay Pride

The school is diverse both ethnically and sexually. The city is very tolerant, hosting the Gay Pride Parade every year, and this tolerance carries over to the school.

Political Activity

Just as we are culturally diverse, we are also politically diverse. Most students would label themselves as Democrats, but there are many who label themselves as Republicans, too. There aren't many clubs that deal with political activism in the school, but anyone can begin a club if there is enough support.

Economic Status

City College is an institution designed to provide academic opportunities to students who are intellectually capable but are not are able to afford an expensive college. Many students are working to pay for their education, while a large majority receive grants from the government to attend the school. Most are middle or lower class, as far as income goes.

Most Common Religions

Religion is important for many individuals at the College. It is not something overtly displayed, but it does act as the moral compass for many of the students. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are the three prominent religions seen at the school, but Buddhism and Hinduism are also visible.
