Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The athletics department at Hunter is almost like an underground scene; if you’re interested and actively search for it, you’ll find a great athletic family—the Hunter Hawks have won countless team championships and offer full-time students with NCAA Division III eligibility a chance to compete in sports like basketball and volleyball. School spirit at Hunter exists, but it's usually limited to athletes or friends of athletes. There is a cheer squad club, but don’t expect everyone to eagerly count the days until game day or discuss the Hawks' recent win in class. So if you are not interested in anything athletic, the closest you’ll ever get to team spirit at Hunter is flashes of yellow and purple uniforms as athletes walk past you on the bridge. Despite this, all students are welcome to attend games at Hunter and tickets (if the game is being ticketed) are usually free for everyone.

Intramural sports also exist, including activities like the chess club and the outing club. For students who are looking to get in shape without competing, Hunter boasts a fully equipped gym that's open throughout the week; students can also take cardio workout classes, cycling classes, Zumba, Pilates, and yoga for free during the semester. Many students take advantage of these classes and find ways to incorporate a quick workout at the gym or a Zumba session with friends into their academic schedules during the semester. Students can also bring guests who are 18-and-up for a free workout. There is also an Olympic-sized pool that's open to all students.

I am beginning Hunter in August but from what I have read the athletics department is fantastic. There is a lot of involement with sports. Athletes at Hunter tend to keep the balance between sports and academics.

School Spirit

School spirit exists, but it's pretty limited to people who are actively involved in the athletic program. Students often are not aware that games are being held or that some teams even exist. However, while you may never have a conversation about any team’s game (or ever attend a game), you will run in to the yellow-and-purple uniform of Hunter’s numerous athletes every now and then.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are not needed to attend games.

Best Place to Take a Walk
