Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Back in the day, Hunter was an all-female school. The demographic has changed since the College became coed in 1964, though it hasn’t quite evened out yet. Nearly every female student is prepared for the 7-to-3 ratio of women to men at the school. This disparity has created an environment for women that can be very comfortable, though it’s not doing women any favors if they are looking for a mate. The number of guys on campus seems to be in an upswing, though. The ratio isn’t blaringly apparent when walking around campus, but it can be if you happen to be in a classroom comprised entirely of girls.

All types of personalities go to Hunter; it's truly a diverse school. Hipster, grunge, preppy, nerdy—whatever you go for, you’re likely to find it. The campus leans toward having a lot of attractive students, either conventionally or unconventionally good looking. Once students leave 68th Street, their lives are pretty much private; everyone is too wrapped up in their own lives to care too much about everyone else’s.

Hard Working Students

Most of students I have met at CUNY Hunter College were very motivated and dedicated to their school work. Being in NYC, students come from all over the country and even abroad. Their education, race background, and cultures are all different.

Interests vary, from theatre to volunteers at hospital.

Facts

Social Scene

Hunter’s social scene usually involves students hanging out around campus in between classes or right after classes. The College has a large commuter population, so a lot of students only come to school for classes and leave immediately after. The College tends to be lively in the evenings, which are when parties, plays, and other club events are held. It is relatively easy to make friends at Hunter through classes, joining clubs, or just hanging out at parties the Undergraduate Student Government often holds.

Hookups or Relationships?

A lot of Hunter students date, although it's relatively hard to be a couple in a commuter school. Unlike a traditional school, you're unlikely to have a random hookup anywhere on campus, although there are some cool spots for making out.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

There are always students just hanging around Hunter on couches, outside on the steps of the Frederick Loewe Theatre, or even just standing in line waiting for a hot dog. Students usually reach out to someone in their class, and you see a lot people within your major from semester to semester, but it takes a bit of work to make a familiar face become a friend. Because Hunter students’ lives aren’t limited to the campus, socializing in a non-academic setting takes place off campus. At the dorms, it is easier to do this because there is a constant pool with which you live. This isn’t the case, though, for an overwhelming majority of Hunter students. Relationships do blossom on campus, but in a city of millions, it isn’t unlikely that students will be in relationships with people other than their classmates.

Dress Code

Hunter does not have a dress code; however, because most students have to travel to class, they tend to dress decently or in whatever way they deem appropriate. Nobody really cares what you come dressed in, and there is not much pressure to come dressed in a certain way.
