Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • It’s not a big party school.
  • Registering for the classes you want can be very difficult.
  • The Honors College program is where you get free tuition and a laptop, but you can only apply as a freshman.
  • There is a two-year language requirement.
Tips to Succeed
  • Attend class and be on time—a lot of teachers keep track and may penalize.
  • Buy textbooks before the semester begins to avoid the long lines.
  • Keep on top of the readings. It's hard to participate when you have no idea what the class is discussing.
  • Keep track of every piece of paper you get concerning requirements.
  • Make a friend in every class and get his/her contact information.
  • Participate, especially if it counts toward your grade.
  • Research professors before taking their classes.
  • See an adviser before registering for classes.
  • See professors outside of the classroom.

Pre-Med and School of Nursing

Most students I talk to are interested in a science major or pre-med track, and Nursing is a popular major as well. The sciences are very challenging at Hunter but it is worth trudging through it to prepare for the MCAT's.

Great Education but Commuter School

Hunter College provides many educational opportunities; however many of these have to be sought after independently. No one will hand you anything in this school. The school is a commuter school and therefore the atmosphere is not the friendliest. It is the type of school where you want to take your classes and get out. Yet New York City is a great place to attend school, and everyone just wants to get out there and enjoy it. Hunter offers a variety of clubs and organizations, both academic and leisurely, that will fit anyone's interests.

Comfort All Around

I feel the school is made for and by the students. There are always fliers hanging up for almost every type of activity one could imagine. There are campus parties and even a place one can get beer for free-as long as they are of age.
