College Prowler Take
While most Dartmouth students are sports fans, few allow their love of the game to reach the extremes of quasi-religious fervor often encountered at big name state schools across the country. Dartmouth supports an amazing number of NCAA teams—half of the student body are varsity athletes! While the basketball and football programs haven’t yielded dominant teams in years, Dartmouth’s ice hockey team is a real standout on the national stage, and winter matches at Thompson Arena are usually a crowd pleaser. Though there is a divide on campus between the jocks and their more eggheaded peers, it’s a pretty permeable one because most Dartmouth students share a healthy respect for the sporting lifestyle, whatever the sport. Whether it’s soccer or lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee or canoeing, varsity or intramural, there’s something for everyone at Dartmouth.

Some varsity sports are really superb—skiing, lacrosse, hockey, crew, and a few others. Rugby is one of the best in the country every year, but it is technically a club sport. Intramurals range from ex-athletes really competing to people who have never played before.

Varsity sports are a joke, except for hockey and skiing, and maybe basketball. IM sports are fun, easy to get into, and vary in level of competitiveness.

Our football team lost every game...
Our football team lost every game in the '08-'09 season, and yet this campus rallies around the football team—go figure. But, overall, we're not a huge sports school, and many of our better teams seem to go unnoticed. IM sports are not very popular.

My Dartmouth interviewer told me...
My Dartmouth interviewer told me that he knew only a few people who weren’t involved in sports in some way. I’ve certainly found that to be, even if we don’t have many teams that the whole school rallies behind. |
