Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While most Dartmouth students are sports fans, few allow their love of the game to reach the extremes of quasi-religious fervor often encountered at big name state schools across the country. Dartmouth supports an amazing number of NCAA teams—half of the student body are varsity athletes! While the basketball and football programs haven’t yielded dominant teams in years, Dartmouth’s ice hockey team is a real standout on the national stage, and winter matches at Thompson Arena are usually a crowd pleaser.

Though there is a divide on campus between the jocks and their more eggheaded peers, it’s a pretty permeable one because most Dartmouth students share a healthy respect for the sporting lifestyle, whatever the sport. Whether it’s soccer or lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee or canoeing, varsity or intramural, there’s something for everyone at Dartmouth.

Very Athletic Campus

We have great facilities. I'm not a huge athlete, so I've been on a club team, which is not a large time commitment. Our winter sports are especially great. We have an amazing hockey team which the whole campus follows.

Nowwww It's Good.

When I was a freshmen, I think all our sports teams collectively won maybe 1 game. Two years later, that's managed to turn around. Our formerly winless football team held their own through overtime, losing by a touchdown to Ivy League favorites, UPenn, which also happens to have almost 3x the undergraduates. Participation is good, everyone does at least some kind of physical activity.

Sports Are Unheard of

I don't hear very much good about our spotrs teams and the only time anyone ever goes to a game is if they know someone on the team. That being said IM sports are pretty well attended and are a lot of fun

School Spirit

Love for the “College on the Hill” extends far beyond the Dartmouth jockwear most students sport around campus. From First Year Trips onward, most Dartmouth students are imbued with a fierce love of their unique and historic institution. The College’s small size fosters a strong sense of community, and students often take the trek to Hanover during their off terms to be around friends and share in the campus camaraderie. Dartmouth alumni are uniquely loyal and noted for being generous with their pocketbooks and connections. There is a growing sense among many recent graduates that the school is slowly being transformed into a cookie-cutter research institution along the lines of the Harvard university model, but, for the time being, at least, Hanover is filled with students who love their school and are sublimely happy.

Getting Tickets

All students receive free entry to all sporting events simply by flashing their IDs—additional planning is unnecessary.
