Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Run-ins with the campus authorities are common but not at all scary. Rightly—and thankfully for many students—the administration tends to treat alcohol abuse as a medical issue, rather than a moral one. If you are caught publicly intoxicated by the campus authorities, sanctions will likely include a fine, a mandatory talk with your Class Dean, and a referral to Dick’s House Office of Counseling and Human Development.

Safety & Security (S&S) is not out to get anyone. They have a pretty good handle on the party atmosphere at Dartmouth, and their primary concern is always for student safety. The Hanover Police Department is an entirely different matter. Those guys don’t mess around, so unless bumming a ride back to campus from the Grafton County Jail is how you’d like to spend a Sunday morning, stay well away from the “H-Po”—of course, that’s easier said than done.

Police at Dartmouth

Safety and Security is pretty chill about drinking, and there are usually no legal consequences.

Campus Security Good, Hanover Police Awful

Campus security (Safety and Security, aka S&S) is pretty good, they usually aren't too strict. If you are clearly drunk and might need some help, they send you to dicks house or they will respond to a call (a "Good Sam") asking for their help. Neither gets you in legitimate trouble. They do put fraternities on probation, however, fairly frequently.

Hanover police, however, are a completely different story. They seem to do anything they can to get dartmouth kids in trouble (probably because they don't have anything else to do). They will literally drive around looking for any drunk person they can find. I know many, many kids who have been arrested for drinking. They also conduct drug stings. Everyone hates hpo and the chief is constantly mocked by students.

It Depends

At Dartmouth your punishment really depends on what you've done academically or socially. Academically, it's not that bad: just don't fail. However if you get Good Sammed too many times, watch out! You might get Park'd.
