College Prowler Take
Run-ins with the campus authorities are common but not at all scary. Rightly—and thankfully for many students—the administration tends to treat alcohol abuse as a medical issue, rather than a moral one. If you are caught publicly intoxicated by the campus authorities, sanctions will likely include a fine, a mandatory talk with your Class Dean, and a referral to Dick’s House Office of Counseling and Human Development. Safety & Security (S&S) is not out to get anyone. They have a pretty good handle on the party atmosphere at Dartmouth, and their primary concern is always for student safety. The Hanover Police Department is an entirely different matter. Those guys don’t mess around, so unless bumming a ride back to campus from the Grafton County Jail is how you’d like to spend a Sunday morning, stay well away from the “H-Po”—of course, that’s easier said than done.

It's fairly strict on drugs, but as far as drinking goes (outside of dorms), there is sort of an understanding between the frats and S&S (safety and security) that a lot of drinking goes on. In fact, a great policy is the "Good Samaritan" policy in which a student can alert campus safety if someone has had too much to drink and neither student receives any disciplinary action for the matter. Safety and security and the administration understand that kids want to let loose and party, and they really want to protect rather than be overly strict.

The campus police are generally very understanding, and if you are coherent, not being aggressive, and not vomiting, they will just take you back to your dorm. If you do get caught, it's a three-strikes policy. The town police are a different story—stay away from them.

I would say that as far as most colleges go, Dartmouth is very lax on its drinking and drug policies. I don't think I know anyone who has been cited for drug use. As for alcohol, if you are caught by the police, you can expect the same sort of legal action as any other place, but a first-time offender can be punished by an alcohol class, I believe, and it is taken off your record. If you are caught by the campus security, the punishment is even less severe. You are taken to the school's medical ward and forced to stay until your BAC is below .05, and you are allowed three strikes. It is very easy to avoid being caught.

I got fined for everything last year. Leaving shoes outside my door, unspecified hall damage, turning in my practice room key too late. It got to be rather ridiculous. |
